Guys I am looking at a new custom 375 H&H Mauser 98 from a custom builder and have some questions and concerns. Please note this will be my first true Mauser 98 rifle. I have other rifles that are versions.

1. The bolt seams to bind going out and in if not pulled or pushed perfectly straight back and forth. Is this typical or am I being to picky? I picked up a Ruger tang safety and the bolt will fall out when the rifle is pointed up and is much smoother.

2. When a factory 300 grain round is chambered you can see rifling marks on the copper jacket of the bullet. Again am I being to picky or is this ok?

Am I missing something? Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

It shouldn’t bind, and there should not be rifling marks on a round of correct OAL etc.

You may want to share more about the maker, or simply keep looking - these look like “red flags” to me….

Maybe it was re hardened, I've read that can .and then sticky when working the bolt. The throat should not hit with a 300 if it's loaded to its max col.

I would rather not say who the maker is although he is well known.

I agree with the red flags I just wanted to confirm my thoughts and suspicions.

The rifle has one of the best inletting jobs I have ever seen but a shame on the action work.

Sometimes a bullet will have rub marks similar to throat rifling marks when fed from the magazine.
In general the things you describe should not be present.
Some guns have a required number of rounds fired as a break-in. My Kahr PM 45 required 200 rounds. That would be hard to imagine on a 375 H&H bolt action to loosen the bolt etc. :)

Hello, My wife and I hunted with Marius 2 years ago. He fit us into his schedule after a different outfitter "bailed" on us. He was always very good with communications and although we didn't end up meeting him personally, he called us multiple times during our hunt to make sure things were going well. We were very happy with him.

Reach out to the guys at Epic Outdoors.

They will steer you right for landowner tags and outfitters that have them.

I have held a membership with them for years and they are an invaluable resource.

Way better that asking random people on the internet...WAY better

Skydiver386,

Did you ever find your 30-06 CZ550? I own a fairly solid conditioned one, if you wanted to talk.
