I recently acquired a rifle that I do not really think I’ll ever use. I figured it would be appreciated here so thought I’d share.

First heres a link to a video of the stock in the light.

The Stock is really the star of the show, which is why theres not really much for pictures of the action itself.

Back in the day when Weatherby was starting out they would take existing rifles & restock them, while often simultaneously rebarreling them to one of the Weatherby calibres. This stopped in 1956 when Weatherby released the Mark V.

The rifle I own is a pre 54 Winchester Model 70 in 300 Weatherby. The stock is most likely from around the same time period. It is absolutely beautiful. It's almost entirely blemish free except for a small chip near the bolt. I cant imagine theres many of these original stocks left. It's a nice unique piece of Weatherby’s history and one I dont think I’ll ever sell.

Anyone who’s hip to the grading system the Europeans use for stocks, I’d be curious to hear what grade this is approximately. Its far & away the nicest bit of wood I own

I am a bit of a Weatherby snub, and I'll have to say that I am green with envious! Congratulations you have a beautiful rifle. If I was you, I'd reach out to Weatherby and see if they can give you more information on the rifle and maybe purchase a letter of authenticity.

There is a Weatherby site called Weatherby Nation, and there are some very knowledgeable individuals on the site that can help you.

Please post more pictures of the assembled rifle.

Awesome beautiful Westhetby I regret not buying a first year Weatherby that was beautiful .

My dad has a similar one that belonged to a great uncle.

Not quite as much figure but same pattern and red stick finish.

His is a Mauser action.

Most of these early Weatherby guns were also left hand twist. Another quirky belief that Roy had.

I come here mainly to hear about the great rifles and those that use the great rifles This is truly a gem. I love the early southgate rifles. I would be afraid of getting a ding on this one. It would never leave the safe

Crotch walnut figure, cut "up the limb" from the crotch. there is always a matchbook pair when split down the center. I saved a blank from the old days that is big enough for an entire rifle to be made with only crotch figure showing. Would have to be a light kicking caliber, no doubt.

Funny this should come up again today. Just yesterday, I pulled a Weatherby out of the safe that I hadn’t handled in a few years. Same story! Insane wood figure, way nicer than I remembered.……. Only mine got a few dings on it during a trip to Africa years ago. I don’t want to derail the OP’s thread, but I’ll post some photos if you’re interested.

Gentlemen, I understand your reluctance to use such a beautiful rifle. And it is a stunner. But, what good is a rifle that is never put to it’s intended use? A rifle is a tool that makes memories. A scratch here or there is easily put right by a competent gun smith or stocker. Take it hunting and shoot something worthy. Make some memories.

To the OP, any updates with this rifle?

I couldn't have said it better. Yes, take those beauties hunting, I'm sure Mr. Weatherby would appreciate that. (y)

I have no idea the shipping cost from here to Costa Rica. I can do my research on shipping and get back with you later today.
