I am flying to Namibia next week. I have followed the instructions appearing on SCI's website to apply for my Namibian Firearms Import Permit. I filled out and submitted form POL 573 (along with all the supporting documents) to the Namibian Police via email (firearmairport@nampol.na). I have not heard back.

Did anyone else proceed this way? How did it work for you?

Thank you.

Hi aardwolf! Based on three trips to Namibia. I have completed the police form online, only to learn upon arrival that they have no access to the website at the airport police station! So, I do it online, and fully expect to fill out the paper form when I arrive at the police station at the airport. It is what it is.

Oh, and the police station has now moved outside of the airport proper. You’ll exit the airport through the main doors, hang a left, and the police station is just a few feet located under an overhang. Your outfitter will undoubtedly be there and will accompany you to the police station. I’ve never had a problem with my guns at the Windhoek airport. It’s the easiest part of getting through the airport. You’ll likely stand in a long line getting through customs though. Enjoy your trip!

I tried to do it in the past, with all documents needed, because the idea was great to go faster.
I think Namibia introduced it in 2017 if I'm not wrong.
However, once at the airport, they told me they received nothing, so I gave up ! I have never seen any hunters who did it, despite numerous trips to Namibia, and talking with several fellows hunters when we were waiting our guns to the police station ! An Austrian told me he tried to do it in the past, but also without any success.

I just provide to the police all my documents when I come to pick up my rifles and that's it.

In the past, I saw some people who were struggling to write on the permit, and once a woman who was quite pretentious, had to come for helping her friend.
But the young lady last time was really friendly, and did a good and quick job.
Usually, it doesn't take more than 10 minutes.
Happy hunting

We returned a couple of weeks ago from another Namibian trip. I agree that sending the form electronically is a waste of your time. It will not be at the airport nor will they access it online. If you wish to save time and headache, print a blank copy and fill it out at home, just don't sign it. It really is a low key, low stress process if you stay in the right mindset and, as always, remember that you are on Africa Time. The ladies at the desk have usually been polite, even friendly at times. The only times that I have seen them not so was when the traveller had their hackles up (one being angry that they didn't have the form he had submitted online!) Good Luck and I hope that you have as much fun as we did! Oh, and a new wrinkle. They have a new outside window on the opposite side of the airport for clearing guns for departures. After you check in at ticketing, you take your firearms outside to the "other" window, check them and return your permit. You then take the firearms back to ticketing and you go to customs.

My experience has been identical to comments already made by others. One tip for you…make dang sure that you have a pen with you to complete your customs form upon arrival. There are no writing instruments of any type in the customs area…I’ve watched people beg, borrow and purchase pens from their fellow travelers during my last trips in ‘23 and ‘24…would be shocked if that changed this year. Have a safe and enjoyable trip!

Don’t worry, Namibia is so easy and laid back!

Just have many blank copies of their paper work and of your 4457 and keep an extra few Ink pens!

We showed up to get our guns on my last trip to Namibia and the whole police office doesn’t have a pen lol. We gave them a few and they were very thankful when we said to keep them… love it.

When I was leaving the same guy who did my fire arm permit was the one who was at airport security checking my luggage. We recognized and laughed and shook hands.

Love Namibia

It doesn't work. Just have your hard copy filled out but not signed and you will do it at the office on arrival.

Travel tip of the week! Bring a pen. So true

@Aardwolf, like everyone else has said the Namibian police online form doesn’t work. The senior police officer didn’t even try to open the computer. Take hard copy and an extra pen or two, yes he did not have a pen. TIA!
