My Take on Dangerous Game Scopes

I realize the point of the video and as I mentioned, that’s what led me to this post to begin with…

On a slightly different note, I watched your 2023 Safari video, I believe it was, and noticed on one of your rifles you had an Sig Sauer scope on one rifle? I’m curious what your opinions are on them…not much info that I have found.

I am not sure what video that could have been as I don't have a Sig scope. I do have a nice selection of their pistols however!
As of now I just use Leupold and Swaro. My son has a Schmidt & Bender and there is a Trigicon ACOG on a mg. Not much variety in my collection.

No worries, perhaps a loaner rifle. Likewise I have some Sig firearms but I am curious about their line of scopes….made in the USA.

Well after the back and forth I did order a 1-10 to give a try on my .375. However, I couldn’t get away from a straight tube. I just prefer the low mounting height and compactness…and frankly it just looks right on an African rifle.

Went with a midrange price point to try it out and see if I like it…I Know I will like the illuminated reticle.

This has been a thoughtful thread! Thanks to all that have contributed…..so far! Now what to do with these two 1.5-5 weaver super slam dangerous game scopes sitting on my desk?

I spoke with the tech guys at Trijicon this week to get the manufacture date of an Accupoint.

I learned that there are high quality rip off scopes and RMRs made in China and sold as authentic.

When buying a high end scope or optics from a stranger. Verify the serial number with the manufacturer first. There are other ways they can determine authenticity besides the serial number.

Do not buy high end optics from strangers on Eeebay. The seller may not even know it’s a Chinese clone.

You are correct! Trijicon RMR's and Acog's are two of the most counterfeit you will run into, along with Leupold MKIV's. We have been burned a couple times. I always check serials with a quick phone call now.

Thats exactly how he phrased it. RMRs are the
Easiest to clone. He had some other more guarded ways to verify authenticity besides serial numbers.

Unfortunately it’s not just Trijicon and not just optics.

Oh that is Fred Burchell's .222 I believe. I was using it with FMJ for monkeys!

I can see the point on a 375, but not on something bigger. IDK, maybe you guys are more comfortable taking a long poke with a 416, 404J, or 458 than I am, but at ordinary MV for those, you aren't getting a lot of expansion out of that lot much past 200 yards, and with 100 yard zeroes, the trajectory starts to be quite looping around 250 yards or so.

Isn't like I've done this a lot, maybe no expansion out of a 400 or 500 gr bullet at 250 yards on a kudu or zebra isn't a big deal. For an impala or Tommy, sure.

I’m not sure I’d be comfortable at an extended range with those calibers either, but solids only have accounted for a lot of buffalo. Whether the soft expands as designed or not, I think the result on PG will be the same in something 40+ caliber.

The scopes are decent quality glass and a couple of summers ago I took the Sig Modern Hunter class and we made shots on steel at 1000yds regularly and I have a Sierra3BDX on my 308 that I am taking to ZA in April.

I would put them in line with mid level Vortexes and the BDX system is the real neat trick.

The scopes are decent quality glass and a couple of summers ago I took the Sig Modern Hunter class and we made shots on steel at 1000yds regularly and I have a Sierra3BDX on my 308 that I am taking to ZA in April.

I would put them in line with mid level Vortexes and the BDX system is the real neat trick.

I wish there were more options with 32-38mm front objectives. Straight tubes aren’t necessary, but the massive front objectives can get bulky at times. I know they help with the light, however I think the mid-range bell size is a good compromise.
