Don't worry, I've been told by several hunters that the Remington 7400 is the best single-shot rifle that brand has ever made. It doesn't bother me, that's why I asked. I hope that with the little use I make of the rifle, I'll be gone before the weapon breaks down in this world. Best regards and thanks.
@Tubby’s Canteen - i guess, as you wrote, the Remington 740/7400 “used in Moderation” could work (clean it twice—-fire it Once—-then clean it twice again), you should then be able to fire a full 4 round clip (temps above 70, no rain, no dust, and No Hurry). What a contrast to the extremely reliable 760/7600 —- which was/is VERY Popular in Pennsylvania & Maine.
In hindsight, keeping the action clean and lubricated w/ top-notch stuff (teflon, graphite, etc. even Rem-oil has teflon in it-wear gloves) would've likely prolonged its useful life! Some custom gunsmiths will still work on 74s and 76s. Many are still out there today with very few rounds cycled, and they'll last a hunting lifetime+ IF properly cared for.
IS! We have two and they are the BEST on moving game and/or in close cover-for deer and bear! After break-in, the gun reloads itself upon firing (just like the semi) AND the shooter doesn't take his eye off the sight at all. The 18.5" carbine model is an absolute pleasure to swing and shoot game on the move. With a quality scope (i.e. 1-5x Leupold) a <10 min trigger job, and selecting quality ammo (premium or handloads) for the job, I hate to say we've taken double the game with these babies. I'll likely take a pump back to Africa oneday for PG (it's perfect as the smaller antelope are always running!) 'Love my bolts for the long and not rushed shots, but the pump is the epitome of a hunting weapon. Just watch any of the Benoit family/friends hunting videos-they put these guns to full use!
I only ever bought them for the resale potential I never could get comfortable on either of the models 74-76. They don’t work for me left handed. I’ve got a Remington 25c and a 141 neither gets used much though both in hard to find calibers
admittedly a slight stock equalization (L or R) and a tang safety design would've been wonderful, but I believe they adopted from the existing shotgun design.?
Unsure but I can confirm 20 gauge 870 furniture will fit.
Yep, it copied most of the 870 design (trigger/safety included.)
@C.W. Richter - I like my Rem 760 Gamemaster in .30-06 (purchased New 1981 $219) and recently bought a ANIB 760 in .308 that was close to collector grade for “only” $750….I intend to hunt with it. Agree that on running big game they are great but the only running Big game animal I ever shot with mine was an Elk @ 60 yrds and my two shots each struck the rib cage and the elk dropped witching 75 yrds. I know I could hit that Elk once with my bolt action — but Not twice.
If someone is going to do that they have to be practiced up you must be a shotgunner familiar with shoot on the move techniques used in competition practice on tires rolling down hills whatever you need to do but it's perfectly doable I wouldn't do it on a first shot on dangerous game that's for sure but I wouldn't be using a Remington pump either!
Rabbits in front of hounds would be good practice
