My .300 Win Mag finally arrived!

No one was coming to hunt. Commercial aviation was closed. A weathy Arab with a private Jet booked every hunt on a large area.

A Zimbabwe game official was present for the entire safari. It was all done legally and certainly did not involve helicopters.

After seeing how well the hunter could shoot and how effective his 300 was on eland, the PH and game officials allowed the hunter to cull some of these buffalo with his 300.

You should not interject your opinion into threads making unfounded accusations about people you don’t know. As far as the man being a game hog, the hunt was a culling operation that was necessary given that no buffalo had been taken by visiting sportsmen for some time due to airline and other travel restrictions.

Our hunter had his own plane and was able to secure the right to fly to Zimbabwe. If I was a billionaire, I would have loved to do the same.

But this hunt kept the families of the PHs and their staff going in terrible times. It also provided meat for locals who were deprived of the meat normally provided by visit sportsmen.

You really should restrain yourself from interjecting strong personal opinions when you have no knowledge of the facts.

I believe Ross Seyfried used the 180 grain fail safe bullet when used his 300 winchester to take a number of cape buffalo.

I would not be surprised sir. He was one of my favorite gun writers and his review of the Winchester Fail Safe back in the mid 90’s compelled me to use them in my light rifle on our 1997 Safari. To date, speaking from my own personal experience, I have not seen more devastating performance on elk sized game using 300 Win Mag 180 grain Winchester Fail Safe. If it were legal, I wouldn’t hesitate to use one on Cape Buffalo.

I am glad that you mentioned them, they are all but forgotten now. I still have several boxes.

I think it wasn’t so far back that you were messing with a .308Norma, did that make way for the .300wm? From what I read it has similar performance to the .300wm with the .300wm more widely available.

My .300wm doesn’t get out much but I’m hanging onto it hoping to use it more.

300 WM was my first "real" centerfire rifle (after a .22 WMR, 16 ga and a 30-30) as a teen and i fell in love with it. You will find that the increased BC (and SD) of the 165 gr pills will fly flatter and hit a bit harder at distance (on smaller game.) On African PG (my son and I both took 300 WMs to Namibia once and 200 gr was best on sm. to med. game. Also a good choice for bear/moose/elk in the US, but the 180 would do the job as well. IMHO the 150s are a bit light/sm for the 300 and do not take advantage of its true capabilities! I like Wby and have had a pile. The last remaining one I have today is a stainless/synthetic ultralight (ALL have been great shooters!) IF you handload, can't go wrong w/ 73-74 gr of IMR 4350 and 165s. ENJOY. IF you're going after buff or bulls down under, I'd use more bullet.

On another note I smacked a Fallow Saturday, no time time for romancing. The .280a.i barked once and I have 14 sticks of Mettwurst to smoke Monday.

I think it’s time to hunt with the .300wm I’m just wondering what projectile I will load.

I haven’t shot Buffalo. Haven’t made it that far north yet but I believe plenty are taken with a .30 and .30-06 among many other things.

Definitely something I want to hunt or cull hunt for the experience.

I am a devoted fan of the .300 WM. I took mine to Zim on my last hunt there. But having taken 2 cape buffalo with a .458 WM, I can tell you that I will.never shoot a cape buffalo with a .300 WM. A water buffalo maybe, they are a lot less likely to kill.you. Someday maybe. A water buffalo in Aus is on my wish list.

Ive taken a variety of buff with everything from a 41 mag up to 460wby. Its really about the bullet and none really overwhelm buff until you get up to really fast big bores using barnes bullets. A good bullet through the vitals kills em every time. Caliber minimums were based on an older time where truly good bullets didnt exist. They dont mean much beyond legality.
