Murray Customer Leather Ammo Belt vs. Murray Ammo Slide

The slide doesn’t go on the belt holding your pants up, it goes on a separate belt with your knife and possibles pouch, etc.
Spot on. Gun belt comes off each time I get back in the truck.

This gets at my objection (mild as it is) with ammo pouches. Lots of hunters wear them on their main belt. It's not wrong but there is a better way. Either wear it on a separate belt or use an ammo belt.

Agreed if this is the case. I have never seen it personally. But then, I have never hunted in a camp with folks I don’t know.

I have Murray's belt and slides, both with elastic loops. When carrying a long gun, I wear suspenders or a leather belt that has a Velcro closure instead of a buckle. When using the Murray belt, I also have a knife and a Murray's slide with Mama's 275 ammo. When I am traveling light and/or hunting alone, I wear a Murray slide on my (velcro closure) belt. The belt and slides are both great and have their time and place.

Safe hunting

As mentioned above... Belt with slide that you remove when in the truck or taking a break with different slides for different rifles instead of pulling and replacing bullets when getting in the truck I would hang my belt on the hand hold in front of me

Slides for me, so while I hunt DG I have one caliber on the belt, and when I hunt PG, I just put another slider on.

I use Els&Co sliders and gun belt. The leather is so thick, that the slider does not move when taking the belt on/off at the truck. But it does allow me to adjust if necessary. Although I keep the slider always as appendix carry. Knife at the back. Nothing else.

On my last trip to Africa, I noticed my PH's ammo belt was getting old, so I gifted him my Murray custom leather belt. I am now looking to buy another belt, from Murray, but I am also looking at their Ammo slides (rifle shell holder). The rifle shell holder essentially slides onto your regular belt. Does anyone have experience with both? Any opinions on which system is better?
I love Murray leather and have had Dick make me several custom items. I prefer the leather, open top shell holders for .300, .375 and similar. I've used them for years. The trouble I had was with the .470 ammo and the same type of shell holders. They were horribly uncomfortable. Last year York had a Trader Keith canvas culling belt that was lightweight and easy to take off. I bought one as soon as I got home!

Now that is interesting, I had never thought of doing it that way. At that point aren't you essentially just making the belt?

Slides are the only way to go. Belts are for Culling and are Heavy. Did I mention Hard to Pack also?

I agree, but why do you feel that way?
Well I have mine on a seperate belt and the slide gives you the ability to move them around on the belt to wherever you want them out the way when tracking and easily slided to where you want them when closing in. You can have 1, 2 or 3. Solids soft split just as you please. 5, 8 or 10 rnd capacity. You can add knife garmin small torch whatever you want.
Get to the truck unbuckle and take it off same as a ammo belt which is much less versatile. And you can keep it with the rifle.

Wearing slides and knifes on the same belt as the one keeping your pants up is a pain in the arse....

It is a normal safari setup. A heavy belt worn loosely that you put on whenever you take a track. Mine holds an ammo slide, knife, possibles pouch and water bottle.

You either do it with the ammo carrier built in (culling belt), or with the ammo added via a slide. I’ve never seen anyone put an ammo slide on the belt holding up their pants.

This is the best way....

This may take a bit….

They both have their pros. I have found more cons to a cartridge belt.

A cartridge belt holds cartridges, a knife, sometimes a handgun. It does nothing to hold your britches up as you typically can’t run one through your belt loops. As a matter of fact, if you get enough stuff hanging off of a cartridge belt they will help your pants fall down. Then you throw a real belt on underneath to do a job it could have done all by itself.

Then you have two layers of leather, and two buckles hanging round your middle. One thing two buckles are really good at doing are pinching your belly rolls every time you move.

I hunt exclusively horseback, so I have another layer pinching my rolls by the time I throw a set of chaps on too.

I will admit, the one occasion I find a loose belt more practical is when I’m throwing loads on mules. I can swing my revolver around behind me, and I don’t knock it around while I’m throwing bear boxes on animals.

I typically carry ten round slides. I carry one on my belt, two in my saddle bags, and a couple in a pack; though I’ve never been far away from my horse to try and carry that thing.

I’ve not been in a situation, a loaded rifle and one slide wouldn’t get me out of; but if I do. I have several more within easy reach.

Granted I may have to go through the anguish of unbuckling my belt to get myself reloaded with a fresh slide.

I can also easily carry different cartridges if I like. Sometimes I like to hunt grouse with the old .45 for camp in the afternoon.

I could probably kick this into the dirt a little more, but I feel like I should call this one.
We all need to loose weight.....not necessarily today.....
After fitting the loose belt swing the buckle to the back and the slides where you want them.....
Slides will work better than a culling belt for the gut.....

I was being a little sarcastic and a little overly dramatic when I wrote that.

I grew up in an old cowboy family, and tend to stick with tradition, most of it goes back to horseback work. We never wear two belts. That usually leads to a conundrum of sorts because those of us that are real purists won’t wear suspenders either. Only sodbusters and sheep herders wear suspenders; a cowpuncher can’t be seen wearing those.

On a side note I’m also a saddle maker. I truly do appreciate a good gun belt and have probably 150 different variations of gun belt laying around the barn that I’ve built over the last 30 years. I’ve recreated gun belts made all through western history, and made my own modern renditions. I just find that about 99 times out of a 100 I’m more apt to grab a slide and slip it over the tongue of my everyday belt.

I think that safari belt use is completely different than every day carry or every day work uses for most of us...unless you're a PH. When I was doing ranch work, we never wore 2 belts or suspenders either! When I was living in Alaska in the bush, we would do a lot of wood cutting for winter. Gun goes into the belt holster and onto your work belt every morning and comes off at night. That's very different application than hunting in Africa.

Hmmm…I only take 1 rifle to Africa…375 H&H. I’ve used a slide on a heavy belt, but personally I prefer the culling belt with a sheath knife. I also prefer mostly wearing the cartridges with the wider part of the belt on my back side until nearing the game. It helps support my back. Easy to slip it around when nearing game, or not too difficult reaching around my 34” waist to grab the softs or solids from my back.
To each his own. I think it’s mostly important that however or what ever choice you go with to practice at the range reloading as quickly as possible. Train until it’s an automatic action. JMO
Best of luck which ever choice you make!

Pure preference. I have the belt ammo wallets for all my hunting calibers, and love them. I have a belt for 12 gauge shells, and love that, too. You cannot go wrong. Just decide based on what is the most comfortable and how you hunt. Murray makes great leather goods.
