MOZAMBIQUE: Mozambique Buffalo Hunt With TSALA HUNTING SAFARIS

Gday safari1
Rouan is probably busy on his next safari or preparing for it so apologies in advance for myself butting in

Yes we saw a few elephants & this guy was pretty amazing but also saw a few others that turned my dial to another level as they had broken tusks & looked like they had more stories to tell imo for which I don’t have photos of these guys but hopefully rusty does

C967FBF6-AAAC-42DD-9305-B3B44D205CA9.jpeg

We saw multiple tracks & fresh dung pretty well every day if not every other day but as we weren’t pursuing these guys we left them alone

I’m having trouble uploading pictures of a few other elephant references so i don’t know what I’m doing wrong on this front as this muppets not good @ these things so if anyone can help it would be appreciated

Cheers

Another good bull in the area.We met him on foot at about 50 yards , he was very relaxed in shade.

Gday
Finally got rusty on a plane so he’s on his way back to Florida & one we can both catch up on some work & looking forward to our next adventure for which we will have the privilege to share with a special mate as we are date punched in for early July 2026
So stay tuned on that as we no doubt get closer we will start a thread & share what’s occurring for which someone may see something that adds a little more to help us as one can never have enough information imo

I’ll most likely get to day 2 of this trip tonight but for now I need to go to work & start earning a few $ as rusty spent all mine this last month ( rusty will know I’m just teasing him & we’ve had a ball in Tassie & Africa & a great mate I can’t wait to do it all over again with)

Cheers

Gday 8th May Day 2 hunting
Up @5
Quick breaks & for me became the a bit of a ritual of a cuppa tea which washed my tablets down followed by a cuppa coffee & banana with a muesli husk biscuit thing although if Rouan was late getting up lol ( joking ) I could squeeze another cuppa in

first water pans showed no tracks of interest to the guys so moved on till they found a suitable set in amongst the elephant tracks ( oh plenty of those guys) & a other species

So now it was game on again & once again marvelled @ the tracker’s ability

we were getting closer to the buff every km we went & closing the gap after the 2nd time we found where the bedding up had occurred to then the very little colour difference of the dung when you put your foot in it & smeared it to see how much variance there was between the 2 colours
I’ve found it a useful tool to use but trackers way ahead of my skillset

But today wasn’t going to be our day as after 12.6 km we pulled the pin as the zim boarder had one the day over us

Spirits were still high but this taswegian was melting in the very high 20’s very low 30’s heat & layed down in the shade @ a pan after devouring another water bottle ( I may have grabbed a cat nap lol )

Rouan & Daniel went to grab the Ute ( that’s the hilux for some who don’t know what us aussies call them) then Dylan asked rusty if he wanted to go for a walk & Rusty’s look of “took your time “ appeared ( joking) was met with a why not so off we went looking for pretty well anything that was fitting his likes ( ha there was only going to be one requirement really of a good representation of the species with age what one didn’t matter lol ) & after about 2 k a small mob of zebra were spotted for which we had to double back on ourselves to get better wind for our approach & then proceeded to gain ground till Lawrence ( tracker we had ) come to a abrupt stop & then we worked out why as in the shade we saw the big bull that his picture is posted previously in other posts so it was a quick pic & time to backtrack out of there ( other elephant’s were with him )

So now it was a zig zag of positioning as not to give our position away to the zebra while keeping the elephants in eyes view & eventually we made it to within the range of the zebra & this was the shot that presented @103 yards
7AB38423-82E6-48F2-90DD-46D36F0051BE.jpeg

Now the shot itself was not on the money as it hit the front off leg & the pills shank itself didn’t enter the chest cavity & why it’s important in my belief of a pill that covers multiple bases is better than a pill that covers only a few but I’ll not bore people with that
The scope was still on 1.7 & although rusty had practiced a lot of the sticks on request the moment of truth had arrived

At impact of the 256 gr pill the stallion showed a pretty good hurt reaction but no Brocken leg as pill went between the ribs & main leg bone grazing that , coming out the back of the offside leg
For reference if that shot was towards the onside front leg more by about 2 &1/2 in the ribs would’ve been impacted & a vastly different outcome would’ve occurred but it was what it was & a major lesson learned from all & so glad on this prototype pill was used as the previous best pill I’d found would’ve struggled to secure this critter as quickly as it did for the follow up shots to occur & those occurred after about a 800 to km tracking job from Lawrence who over some very hard ground didn’t wavier on what one he was following despite the stallion joining the mob on impact of the pill which later we found out he was following a crack on one hoof :)

The mob had left him as he couldn’t keep up & dropped off standing & slightly wobbling which Dylan tried to get rusty into a better position for a follow up & as they went to the left
Lawrence & I stayed in behind the bit of bush waiting for the finisher & then the zebra started moving off & about to drop into a bit of a gully which it was advised for rusty to take a rear end shot as we knew we were close to the zim boarder & we couldn’t get it once it crossed that line & once I heard that shot I went to the right & put a 500 Jeffery 467 gr ceb solid through him as he went down that bit of a gully which stopped him in his tracks followed by another from rusty as the insurance shot

We ended up only 80 meters from the zim boarder
Man that was way to close for comfort but definitely one rusty won’t forget for his first African critter I guarantee

Took our pics loaded him up once Rouan arrived & off to skin butcher & a complete analysis of what had occurred with the pill & this is was what I love doing

Once all cleaned up
Had a great tea

washed down with a few celebrity drinks after we gave Dylan his reward for guiding rusty on his zebra
For which a bottle of bundy was his reward & you’ll have to use your imagination as I’m having trouble attaching pictures for some reason but if you look @ Rouan lining his bottles up you’ll get the idea lol but unlike Rouan he couldn’t finish his whole bottle that night lol

In bed around 9 ready for another day tomorrow

I tried attaching other pics but after 2 hrs I just needed some zzz so another day for those
Cheers

Sh!t, your giving out bottles of Rum.

Happy to see they are 2oz sample bottles. Your trip to the Bottlle’o must have cost a few bob.

Nice Zebra

Gday Cbh
I think we may do a little bigger bottle of bundy when we catch up :)

Yes we spent a few Bob in the bottleo’s first one ran out of the little bottles lol

Yes we had plenty of them & it gets better for which Rouan was a great sport

Yes he’s a good skin for a zebra & one never tires of these guys

Cheers

Gday
One thing I forgot to mention was on our way back to the skinning tree with the zebra ( the new camp will have its own slaughter/skinning /salting shed area I believe so I’ll miss that skinning tree as it’s pretty cool imo ) we came across a pack of wild dogs while we didn’t get the best photos
33740519-CAC1-48A3-98B6-F7182ACB9FA7.jpeg
it was a truely great experience & shows imo some extremely good balance of what’s occurring on this place yes conservation @ it’s best of the big picture that’s truly sustainable
Cheers

Gday
9th May
Up @4.30 had the usual breaky & off to the village for a buff that was coming in to the maize crops

Overall no luck as we walked through some pretty tight spots that visibility off the track was only feet in some cases but a 10 yard shot was going to be a long way inamongst the palms & reeds
That maybe not for everyone but cool imo as gives a little more perspective on the challenges one can face
97FE140A-3103-4DB4-81E2-CBB93198839E.jpeg

Pulled out of the village & back to higher ground which drove through some beautiful mopani trees & back down to the save looking for fresh tracks but nothing that excited the guys so we just kept on pushing on till we found suitable tracks on the higher dryer little more open 10/40 yard was the visibility in this area mainly odd spot a touch further
Followed these tracks & once again you could tell we were close even smelling it in the air/dust

Daniel came around one bush ( head tracker ) & low & behold one of the two bulls we were tracking was walking/feeding in our direction unknown to us & those two had a special moment of looking into ea others eyes that seemed to last 10 seconds till the bull broke & bolted with the usual dust a debris going everywhere when it occurs

None of us seen the actual moment take place I believe although on the bolted 2 dugga boys rusty got his first glimpse of a buff although only his bottom part

Truly a great time to be in the bush & one to see Daniel’s face light up & tell the story of eye contact they had was truly special & Rusty’s first glimpse is something we talked of all the way back to the Ute & as we lived it all again numerous times throughout the trip

Got onto some more buff tracks after lunch but the boarder wasn’t our friend again so back to the Ute we headed as we went we
Had the sticks go up on a impala ram later but just wasn’t to be as branches & leaves were in our way so off he trotted for another day ( had a few of these over the trip 8 in total & more to come on how we broke the impala curse lol )

That was our day done & saw plenty of other critters including elephants again steinbok, duiker kudu ostrich & absolutely heaps of baboon

Also Had a leopard stalking a porcupine :)

Only walked just over 8km today but really good times @ a level that was pretty intense @ times
Had a great meal as usual washed down with a couple whiskey & in bed @930

Cheers

Those two elephant are superb. And so similar I could hardly tell they were different animals.

How many elephants do you get on quota in the area each year?

You guys seem to have had a great time, as I would expect.

Reading your reports and seeing your pictures really takes me back to August last year, when the wife and I were in that very same camp, hunting under Rouans guidance.

Keep it coming.

Absolute ball ,guess you 2 had the same rough treatment lol

Did you do a report as we will be back next year in July & if it’s possible could I take some information off it for my mate that will be joining us in 26 to give him a little bit of a insight from a different persons perspective
Keep it coming.
Will do

Gday
10 th May

Up @4.20
Usual breaky for me although Rouan cut my 2nd coffee short lol
No she was time to hit the tracks & no use burning daylight sitting in camp lol

Onto some nice tracks & followed for a couple hours
First hour&1/2 going well as gaining ground on them & direction they we’re heading all was looking good until something put a be in their bonnet & turned & quickened up their pace as could be seen in the amount of sand Disturbance & guess what direction they headed
Yep to a no go zone for us lol

So pulled out & headed back to the Ute which soon found another fresh set of tracks so onto those & followed those in the opposite direction ( I can’t tell you what as all I know is the sun angled different ) but they turned & went towards the neighbours for which we stayed on the track while Rouan & Lawrence went to get the Ute .
We were going to have a look for impala with Dylan but the ticks in the area were insane & left first spot as it was crawling with those ones with spots on legs & heaps more brown ones
09156107-1C14-4B53-A464-CCBCD516A9F5.jpeg
while the second spot was better it was still stand on track clear the debris back to the soil & the game was role our trousers up & watch them come for you
Was the most killing we had done all trip & I don’t think we missed lol well on checking ea other none seemed to get through

When rouan & Lawrence turned up Rouan had a little banter time @ our expense:) & the look on Lawrence’s face was priceless on the first time he saw our Lilly white legs
Oh he hadn’t seen anything yet so stay tuned it’s a coming lol

Had a bit of a break was 31c & then headed back to top of the property or that way I think but I know it was against zim boarder & hoping to catch one on the last hours heading to a pan or grazing but nothing fresh but the scenery & little gully systems there were truly beautiful & annoyed with myself as I didn’t take any pictures of the sunset ( hopefully rusty did ) but i did take this one on a bank @ the head of a gully system of some old elephant bones
B6C0C57C-60B1-412C-92C5-F9F61FC6BC19.jpeg
but man some serious numbers of buff were using this gully system as it was like my heard of cows had done a few laps

But no buff seen back to the Ute that Lawrence had driven ahead to pick up point
Had a extra water on arrival & needed lights for the drive home

On the way back we saw a absolute tank of a bull in the lights & wow I thought on the quality of that buff was truly beautiful to see
Saw another mob plus a few other critters

A truly great day again
Had burger’s & apple pie for tea washed down with a couple of whiskies that were needed only to wash the dust down lol

Saw duiker impala jackal steinbok kudu
Walked about 10 km @ a guess today

Cheers

Yup I did. Don't know if it adds anything more to your existing knowledge.

Gday
11 th May
Up @4 & had the usual breakfast & got my extra cuppa this morning :) plus as we were leaving camp it was time to change things up so a theme song was born

Starting checking the pans for tracks & found some good fresh ones on the top ones
Followed for couple hours then you seen Daniel change his approach & before long the dung was getting a lot fresher for next hour you could see were gaining fairly well on the buff & started to smell urine aroma in the sand which my rifle sling came off @ this stage

Next 1/2 hr it started to go to the next level of smells & fresh dung then the dreaded boarder came along to spoil the party that was I’m sure was only minutes away

Rouan walked off away from us a bit of a fist pump & mumbled a few words
On his return I put my hand on his shoulder & said it’s all cool NEXT CONTESTANT
Those words I hoped were reassuring @ the time & been used a few times before on this trip but you never know until you’re in a position like that how someone will take it fully but it went down well & we were all disappointed of not getting a opportunity but laughing about it on the walk back to the Ute also so overall what a experience to taste those smells in the air/dust
Yes a very special moment

So off to another area & im sure it was as far away from that border as Rouan could go lol which we dropped Daniel & Lawrence off on one track for them to scout that but & we went ahead to check another pan & the trackers got sidetracked tracking & didn’t meet up for a bit which for me wasn’t a concern as my feet were swelling a bit more than normal in the heat (34c ) & gave me a bit of time to rest them up over lunch

Rouan went for a bit of a drive to look for them & before long we headed back to camp which grabbed some supplies of water & snacks & we were off to sit on a pan up in a tree stand while Dylan went back to look for them

We settled in

& the knats loved rusty ( look closely)
EE52EF89-4302-4EA0-AA7D-21E50652085F.jpeg

We settled our attention on a few bullfrogs for awhile thinking of frogs legs for tea lol
4D49DFED-DCC1-4E69-BF5A-1D1ED30B5A97.jpeg

Saw a young kudu
48B7A14C-69B7-4042-BD81-C362BF03F161.jpeg
& this little fella turned up
B6E85EFF-1270-4774-9E97-747B3DC23565.jpeg

As you can see from the vapour trail
D6922215-6613-4D4C-BF08-54A7415CF11C.jpeg
the shot was spot on by rusty as he ran up over the little rise his tail came up :) & the expression on Rusty’s face was priceless & one I’m glad I got on video ( these type of pills get a vapour trail a lot & it’s one I like for visual of knowing where the pill went with a fair amount of certainty )
He made 37 yard

Got everything down & us then proceeded over to where he was hit went up over the small rise & what a wonderful sight it was
B26E5148-AA6E-441A-BD1F-8382468E819A.jpeg

The OH Fire truck moments were soon upon us as he grew when we approached

B83EBF89-1340-476D-9BB6-3752E8FC5E5B.jpeg

Now we’re not so much into the tape measure ( only one we did & even the ones I’ve got with rusty in other places this is the only critter we’ve done together ) but the way Rouan & I we’re guessing we had to settle it & only way to do that was a lie detector for which that still didn’t really as it wasn’t long enough lol ( the tape measure max was 60 in )

After a few pics we Loaded him up & back to the skinning tree

A516CDA1-F4EA-4081-804B-40F5724D4E76.jpeg

Took some backstrap out of him to go with the zebra & sat down to a nice meal again washed down with a extra whiskey & seeing Rouan stepped up today we presented him with a big bottle of gin :)
907B46BF-1FFB-4DC2-BD40-63685E1A2198.jpeg

His reply
thanks I can have 2 drink’s tonight lol that was a great reply in my books :) & the quality he said was better also but gin it’s all crap if you ask me lol

A big day indeed of ups & downs but that’s hunting & went with our theme song for the day

Cheers

Fantastic Kudu

We did see elephants on 2 occasions a few days apart. Walked up on a bull standing in the shade approx 35 yards. When we realized he was there. He waved his ears at us and we backed out slowly only to realize there were 5 or six more behind him that we could not see. Another time we drove up on 2 bulls with broke off tusk, they quickly headed away and disappeared in the bush. A herd actually walked thru camp when we were not there, George ( a member of Tasala ) was there to see and reported to us.

Back After a Long Time – Hello Again!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a member since 2015 but haven’t been active since 2017. Life got busy, especially with building my second business. Still, I’ve kept my passion for hunting and followed things from afar. Now that I have more time, I’m excited to reconnect, contribute, and be part of the community again.

All the best,

I'd like a bag of 100. I could actually pick it up since I'm in North Irving, but if you prefer, shipping it is fine.
