MOZAMBIQUE Hunting Information

Can local residents currently hunt in Mozambique ? It’s a question which I’ve never thought about until now.

The ministery of foreign affairs of my home country Austria has a travel warning for northern region of Moçambique- Cabo Delgado, specially Pemba but also Niassa is named.
So I had a look to the same site of US ministery- the same warning.
I‘ m thankful for informations from hunters who traveled this region- specially Niassa via Pemba.
I‘m interested to hunt there, but don‘t want to take more risks than other African Safari countries

Is it legal to bring and use a silencer/surpressor to/in Mozambique?

I can't seem to find the information in this thread, and there are others where the question is asked, eg https://www.africahunting.com/threads/silencers.71123/ but the answers turns to as if it can be brought in and out of the US, traveling through other countries, and stating that is it legal in eg SA or Namibia. All perhaps valid answers but not relevant for the question: can it be brought to and used in Mozambique.

Hopefully somebody knows, preferably with a link to some official documents.

I don’t know of the official documents but, I do know that there were people in camp that used them on their rifles while I was there this past October.

Thanks. Were they foreigners (I assume they were, but eg in Poland, foreigners are not allowed but Polish are allowed for boars)?

Great, thanks, found the video, where it's shown they hunt with silencers, so that's a good sign.

I would still get the facts first, rather than relying on what's been done by others. A lot goes on at airports in Mozambique . . . not all of it strictly legal, and you don't know when you're going to run into an officer who is more officious than is actually necessary.

When I arrived at Tete, I had help to clear my rifle (no suppressor) and it still took a fair amount of time, a fair amount of paperwork, and lots of stamps and signatures. I saw others who were trying to accomplish this alone and ran into one of them as I was leaving. He told me they spent the better part of a day trying to sort things out.

You can run into the same thing at roadblocks. We were stopped and being given some trouble, and our driver had the phone number of the boss, who dealt with the officer. Others, who didn't have the phone number, were delayed for some time.

What's the latest info on travel to and hunting in Mozambique? I see the US State Dept has issued a travel warning? I have a hunting trip scheduled for June 2025.

Nothing new, as always it refers to the provinces of Niassa and especially Cabo Delgado.

I’ve been to several countries while they were under stage 3 or even stage 4 (Danakil in Ethiopia most recently) travel advisories, and while I’m (obviously) still here, I’m not sure these were always my wisest decisions.

It is true that while the Cabo Delgado and Nampula areas are still to be avoided, I’d suggest that it’s not entirely true that nothing has changed in Mozambique. Since the 2024 presidential elections recently, which have been disputed, there have been problems pretty much throughout Mozambique which have elevated the threat in more traditional hunting areas from what it has been over the last few years.

Note that the threats are almost never in hunting areas themselves, although these can and are subject to more local threats, but in getting between urban airports and hunting areas. There have been riots and significant loss of life even in Maputo just in the last few days.

As always though, your personal tolerance for risk (or that of your family!) will determine where and when you should travel. Governments will err on the side of caution (as they should), and most people who visit areas under level 4 (short of active war zones) will still never notice anything amiss (although it’s pretty hard to miss enhanced security forces).

It’s a game of odds. And in Mozambique the odds have recently changed, not dramatically, but not for the better.

It is true that there are unrest in Mozambique since the recent elections, but it is always difficult to assess how far something like this endangers the safety of tourists and hunters. It is also true that as a foreigner you often cannot or do not want to perceive the danger in Africa. The latter affects, among other things, some hunters who go into areas where it is better not to go. The recent events in Cameroon are a sad example of this. I don't know whether the situation is already similar in Mozambique, except in the two provinces mentioned. Warnings from governments should be taken seriously because as an insider you know much more than a tourist or even a hunter. One cannot see the danger in Africa, even it is present. Information about safety communicated from various local tour operators and outfitters will always be very subjective for many reasons and should therefore be evaluated critically.

Mozambique has always had a limit of 40 rounds per caliber. You ammo gets counted coming in and going out.

In 2014 I took 60 rounds of .375 Ruger into Mozambique, they did count rounds coming in and out. This was in Beira not Maputo.
