MOZ Terrorist Attack..

I hunted Niassa Province in 2016 with Manuel Carona of Majune Safaris. For Majune we flew into Lichinga and drove east to the concession. There was ISIS stuff going on at that time in the NE part of the Mozambique near Tanzania and along the coast - so it has been happening for awhile. Also, the civil unrest between the differing political parties was a bit heated so to say while we were there.

It seems that now ISIS individuals are moving a bit further west and maybe a bit south. I would go hunt with Manuel or any of the other areas of Niassa this year. The eastern hunting blocks, I would need to get confirmation from the outfitter that this has been resolved. Then I would go.

My interpretation is the cyclone from last year hit the area hard, the energy companies continue to invest in the area (locals don't believe any benefit will come to them), and President Chapo just made a recent visit. So, I'm not surprised that the Islamic Terrorists are making incursions further west to find resources and de-stabilize the area.

Past the actual act and outcome, what makes people nervous is the randomness of this act. This wasn’t expected. It isn’t like this was a known occurrence, that happens every now and then, in this area. Where you say, “well I knew what I was getting into”. This wasn’t some TIA, random robbery at gunpoint, that ends is an epic embellished tale over time. Whether opportunistic locals or religious extremists, they murdered and beheaded people, kidnapped others and burned the place to the ground.

The world isn’t safe. Africa in particular isn’t safe. But there is an illusion that hunting camps, with the revenue they bring in, are considered by locals and the government, as ‘above it all’, to be left alone, even protected. This illusion is only held together, by the lack of occurrences, of events like this.

The “well it’s a big country’ argument has truth to it. If it is actually religious extremist, it’s easier to sell a ‘we got this under control’ government statement. If it is opportunities locals, there is a much larger problem here.

It’s the randomness, that doesn’t allow a level of predictability, to be accessed, in factoring in risk.

Most people, no matter what the deal is, up to and including FREE, are going to take a risk that they could be kidnapped and or brutally murdered for a recreational activity.

How much of a deal is necessary, for one to want to be the first guy to test the theory of, ‘well it’s a one off’? How many ‘no issue’ hunts are required to be back to business as usual?

Some less risk averse people, are going to have some epic hunts, on the cheap, sooner rather than later. First guy in gets the biggest deal.

I agree with your points and everyone's risk tolerance is different. I can tell you when I was in my 30's I was game for about anything, a very high tolerance to risk. Today in my 60's, that risk is just not worth it to me any more.
I have read posts on here where guys will say it is not safe here in the US either. That is a total crock and cannot even be compared to what this post is about. I have a hell of a lot better chance of legally defending myself if chit hits the fan right here in my country of residence that if I were in Africa. As the saying goes, it is safe, right up until it isn't.
I am reminded of the meme that says everyone is an atheist right up until they clog the toilet at a friends house.

Damn… this is No Good… this will impact the Niassa a great bit I would think.
I would assume there will be a lot of cancellations for this a season and maybe next as a result
I assume this will impact the operators quite a bit I assume which is horrible.

While my thoughts and prayers go out to the people impacted I do hope all of Moz is not painted as “you should not go there.”. A good example is @TSALA HUNTING SAFARIS whose are is 1,000 miles from this trouble so should not be impacted so please do not erase all of Moz due to this

Agree. And not to get this off track but that’s why I hate it when people say they are quitting or not supporting DSC because they are having trouble with their show. We need them and SCI both for when tough situations come up.

Most definitely true….but that just makes a strong point to why Good Leadership is SO IMPORTANT….which….is what they have failed at recently and must course correct
