Most Overrated Hunt and Most Underrated Hunt

Funny I am not much of a dog man but I love stalking whitetail deer. To each their own.

Most underrated in a lot of areas is run and gun turkey hunting.

Most overrated in my opinion is chasing anything with dogs. I like to see animals behaving naturally (as in not chased).

Run and Gun on turkey??

Please do an OP to explain that.

I have hunted turkey in a variety of ways, even by chance, aka dumb luck, walked into them, walked under them while roosting and flushed them trying to slip in on deer.

Absolutely. They are extremely challenging in a wild environment. Typical farm sable are born and raised in fairly small enclosures like stock animals before sale and release. They are habituated to humans from their earliest days. Typical small operations purchase three or four bulls. It is why we often see a specific bull advertised available for X dollars. I tend to assume he has a name as well.
Now I don’t care who you are that’s funny!!!!!!!!!!

Most overrated are DG hunts in RSA. Listening to those guys at shows one would think they would be the thrill of a lifetime instead of just shooting farm animals.

Most underrated are night hunts for dry land hippo and elephant in full moon. Though not for the faint of heart.

Took a pic the next day of the shot, it was a charge at 15 meters (not the one we were after), .500 MDM did the job.

Why do you say so?
I am asking because after the buffalo hunt in Caprivi, I could see myself hunting buffalo sometime in the future in South Africa.

one thing about public land hunts is you have to outsmart the hordes of people as well as the elk [or deer] . start by going 5 ridges in off the end of the road. I remember taking my son on his first elk hunt ,Colorado, rode the horses in about 5 miles up to 11000 ft. about 1 hour later it clouded up and started snowing so hard you could barely see the horses ears. no sense of direction in the whiteout conditions, and we were lightly equipped, I was worried ,so did the only thing I knew. tied the reins together looped em over the saddle horn and let the horses choose their way about 2 hours later we broke out right above camp. Exciting.
had to go kill a rattle snake, lost my train of thot 6 this year

Most overrated African game are Sable and Lechwe. Even in Moz and Zim Sable stand around. These animals are good for bow hunters!
Most underrated are Zebra and Eland in the wilds of Africa. Always alert for movement! We tracked 5 Eland from a the closed zone waterhole at Eden, Namibia. Gave them a 5 minute head start and they still gave us the slip!!! Thick bush is always tough.

trying to post some pictures of the mounts I recently received and the snake I just killed this evening that caused me to loose my post. here we go now again

I want to preface this by saying; This will probably be inherently controversial, because one person's trash is another's treasure and vice versa. But I'm sure we can give our opinions with the understanding other people might not have the same.

What do you think is the most overrated hunt, and which hunt do you think is the most underrated?

For me:
Most overrated hunt would be Nilgai
Most underrated hunt would be Eland

For me:

Most overrated was Leopard. I just hated it, and kept failing, and had to do it again and again out of pride. It’s just a pain in the butt and a lot of luck, plus a combination of exhaustion and watching paint dry.

Most underrated hunt is Elephant. For what it costs and for what the experience is, it’s a very understated bargain. It is definitely the most spiritual experience of the big-5 and costs less than a quality elk hunt.

Bonus underrated hunt: Shooting sand grouse at twilight coming into the river bed is probably the highest form of wing shooting I’ve ever experienced. And I’ve done a great deal of wing shooting.

Amen, I learned I am not a leopard hunter.

I’ve gone out west elk hunting for decades and sitting over water with a bow is very effective, but I don’t go into the mountains to sit. I want walk, Glass and enjoy being in the mountains and the freedom to walk for miles.

If I could sit in a blind out behind the house and leopard hunt, I might do that. but I can’t walk for miles on end here like I can in the mountains or Africa.

I totally understand that. I’m exactly the same. I can glass for bear for weeks and never get bored. But sitting in a chair in a blind staring at the same chunk of zebra lashed to a tree only to get skunked day after day..? Nope. Can’t do it.

Getting a leopard is a top priority for me, however. So knowing myself, I elected to do hounds over leopard for my first hunt.

Yep, I didn't need to experience leopard "hunting" to know it's not for me. Same with bear baiting. It needs to be done but I'm not going to do it. Though I hunt geese over decoys it does try my patience some days. Fortunately, the fields I hunt have wooded sloughs and ditches nearby so the dogs and I can walk out for jump shooting when things get slow. Very thankful I still have good "wheels" at age 72 (73 in a month). Not sure I'll keep hunting when my legs finally give out. I've done enough.

Hi Green Chile, I just recently bought a 470 NE barrel for my Thompson Center TCR 83-87 single shot. Im just looking for some 470 NE to shoot at the range just to try it out. I dont need anything special but I just wanted to see what you have left. I dont necessarily even need a full box.
Thanks
Bill
