My friend got stuck three hours in a holding room because he did not have a permit for live ammo. This was in Munich. They held him in the room till his plane was boarding. Must be more hunter harassment

Wow! Did he make his flight? Take his ammo?

I will have to ask him if they kept the ammo. He did make his flight to US. This happened on way home. I heard some problems with rifles permits but the ammo a new deal.

What airline was he on?

They did let him keep his ammo. I will have to ask about what airline. Never heard of ammo permit.

The city of FRANKFURT used to require a permit for your ammunition and firearms.
RSA requires it for both ammunition and firearms, as does Namibia, etc. etc.

Just some of these in-transit countries, in the German instance (City governments) being a PIA.

I'd like to hear about the Munich governments requirements and how to obtain said permit.

That may be were the problem is. He flew through Munich instead of Frankfort. I'm glad I am using PH rifle this time it a ruger Alaskan just like mine only 416 instead of 375.

Saw this too @lwaters. Steve also said that in Munich they told him the ammo and rifles had to be in the same container which is exactly opposite to what they tell you in Joburg.

I put mine in check luggage when I left Joburg. But couldn't when flying to Durbin

I bet Steve was fired up like a banty rooster

Well of course that's normal behavior, but I'd like to have been a fly on the wall for sure!

People should NOT be afraid to take their own guns to Africa!!!
Everyone should use a hunting travel agent and NOT fly through Europe! This comes up over and over some guy wanting to save $100 on a plane ticket then they tell everyone "use your PH's gun it's less hassle".
Nonsense just do it right and you won't have problems!
Regards,
Philip

Key lesson to be learned "NOT fly through Europe!"

This has been going on for a while in Europe. Couldn't agree more- use an experienced hunting travel agent and avoid Europe.

The airlines stick it to you coming back if you buy anything to bring back. Touring after hunt makes bringing rifle a hassel.

Depends where you live and the routes you have available.
If you happen to be able to fly directly from your home to the continent then you are lucky.

Knowing the transiting procedures when you are going through various countries is all about doing some research and if you are not so inclined, then hire a knowledgeable travel agent.

Of course you can skip the paperwork.
I like my own firearms too much.

I have to transit at least one country to get to anywhere in Africa.
The following are the best one stop routes from my home and they go through Europe:
UK requires no paperwork to transit with a firearm. (Although, the airline has a firearms fee)
Holland requires a permit you can apply for through email.
Frankfurt (not Germany) does not require a permit.

Going through the US creates at least one extra opportunity for my firearm to be "lost" and more PIA. No permit though.

I transited through Switzerland (Zurich) without any problem, just had to give advance notice to the Airline (Swiss).

Absolutely no questions, problems-nothing, when transiting Frankfurt and Munich with rifles and ammo in April.

Flew Lufthansa and SAA, tickets ordered online and guns added by SAA by phone.

I am with Brickburn on this one. For those of us in Canada, London is the best transit point, so long as you aren't changing airports. Once you change airports, things become complicated.

As for returning with ammunition, I have never had any left over . . .

Are you guys flying on "split" tickets, requiring new check-in in Germany?

I know this can cause lots of issues with customs, immigration and so on.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
