Montana model 1999 35 Whelen

MRC isn’t out of business but they have done a reorganization. I’ve spoken with them at length about what their current products are and what they are looking at in the future.

That being said, I didn’t ask about any warranty issues from the previous generation. For a definitive answer you would need to contact them.

As for the rifle in question, BUY IT!!! Figure the rest out later. They are quality rifles and I’ve not heard of many problems with them.

Yep, MRC is back in business.

But, the recoil lug is not the same as the previous line. I would prefer the old style.

The scope mounts are a machined in rails. Which I do like.

The differences between the old and new are definitely personal preferences.

Edit:
They are also located in Michigan.

I have the CVA, I like it. Ive put a few hundred rounds through it the last couple of months, very accurate rifle. Its amazing how compact a single shot is even with a 25 inch barrel. And its a take down model, very easy to travel with. All that being said I have a Winchester Model 70, in .270 being re-barreled to .35 Whelen right now.
@Deepfork
That's the best thing to do to a 270.
Make it a real rifle. My Savage started out as a,270 but I soon cured that problem. Didn't need a 270 when I've got the 25.

LOL, I don't really consider a .270 a disease needing to be cured. But the old Winchester does need to be brought back to life. Thousands of shots down the barrel she is shot out. Krieger barrel, and getting her re-blued and the original stock professionally refinished. Gong to look like a brand new 1963 model!!

What twist are you going
Bob

well just called on it as I was going to go ahead due to the good reply's I got here but it is gone I wonder if Action Bob found the listing and grabbed it? haha
I did not... But sounded like a deal that was too good to last!

hi all, looking for advice on the above rifle I have a chance to purchase nd wonder if anyone has thoughts on the rifle since the company is out of business and I have no knowledge of them. the gun is priced at 1100.00 and looks like new not a scratch or blemish on the metal with a clean looking bore, stock looks great and no handling marks or scratches does not appear to have been fired much at all. I am concerned about if something breaks about parts. thanks
Bob Nelson is our expert on that caliber. He has forgotten more than we know. I would seek his expertise

@Hyde Hunter
It's a 35 Whelen, one of the grandest medium bores for everything from mouse to American bison and the big bruins as well as ALL African PG.
BUY IT.
Bob
BOB, you like anything in “.35 Whelen” — you clearly have a .35 Whelen BIAS ...just because it’s an efficient, capable, do-it-all NON magnum caliber doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone (or maybe it does?).

Agree, I think Bob hunts Quail, Ducks, & Elephant with .35 Whelen.

Now Bob, them’s “fighting words” - and you’d be hurting Jack O’Conner’s feelings....he put the .270 on the Map !! Only Elmer Keith condemned the .270 and he did that just to differentiate himself from the more popular/respected/successful Jack O’Conner. Too bad because Elmer “Magnum” Keith was great in his own right — developed the .41 mag etc..

@hank Buck
You are 100% correct I do have a big bias to the Whelen. When loaded to its FULL potential it does everything the 338WM will do and then some. It will reach out to 400yrds and put big hurt on game with 225s loaded to 2,900fps and will deliver bone crunching power up close and personal with 310s at 2,455fps
What's not to love.

If old Jack didn't sing the phrases of the 270 it wouldn't have gotten of the ground. The 25 Nieder was just as good and went on to become the 25-06 but didn't get the praise of the likes of Jack. A 25 cal 120gr at 3,000 fps will kill game just as dead and just as far out as a 270 cal with a 130gr at the same speed. Does the extra 10 grains and.02 of an inch really make that much difference .
I rest my case your honour.

Bob, don’t “ rest your case” yet - if you pump up the .25-06 too much you’re only 1/100th of an inch away from agreeing that the “.243 is an Elk Cartridge” argument. The .25-06 in Not equal to the .270 and you only compare the 130 gr to support your comparison (very sneaky Bob) - the 140 gr and 150 gr make the difference on larger game and their sectional density insures deep penetration that makes it better at Big game then the .25-06. Now, I would NEVER argue the greatness of the .35 Whelen (for fear you’d find where I live and track me down) but there is a lot to like about the .270 as well...

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
