Money in South Africa

I's sure the OP will be glad to find out there are other options and the two parties can sort out some payment options!

I believe there was a misunderstanding on payment options. We accept cash, CC or wire transfers. Just not Travelers Checks.

That is why it is always nice to ask your outfitter about options when you have a problem. Talking to them instead of telling them always works best. I am sure one of those will work for the hunter. Looking forward to reading the report on how your hunt goes.

yeah i figured we would work something out, this thead is in no way a slam to the outfitter i feel good about these guys and am looking foward to the hunt, i just wanted to see what other guys did and how they feel about carrying large amounts of cash. As i stated previously that i would discuss the issue more with my outfitter. thanks for the valuable input from everyone.

Coltcc, Duluth Firehose pants have a "hidden" pocket that is very convenient for carrying your extra cash. Just thought I'd pass that "tid- bit" along for what it is worth.

well he did say i could send the money to him in the states. i havent really pressed the issue with him but i will ask more about it
most outfitters have bank accts in the states that you can send the money to.my outfitters always let me send them a check when i got home, they have your trophies so they know they will get paid.

that makes sense and i dont like the ldea of pre paying unless i have built a relationship with the company.

Im kinda apprehensive like you being my first trip over. I am going to do a wire transfer myself about 3 weeks before departure. I look at it like this if they are a Sponsor on AH the risk is almost none I hope. Will carry only tip money and enough to buy a few things. Pay balance with credit card when hunt is done.

well i also hope all outfitters on A.H.com
are legitimate business and geat people. with that said i bought a Alberta bear hunt at a safari club international dinner and that associate was the worst outfitter ever! i was told they cant check every outfitter nor do they Guarantee any outfitter as to their legitimacy. i said i understand. A.H is a great resource for sure and u can probably find someone that use your outfitter as a reference

I should have said “was apprehensive “
Not anymore after all the texting between me and outfitter. I have no problem in doing a wire transfer.

coltcc,

when i went to SA the first time, i paid a bit over 1/2 my cost up front. i took a money belt that goes inside my pants with a zippered pouch to carry my big cash and passport.

i carried a wallet in a cargo pocket of small bills and things that were not precious to me. after the hunt, my outfitter was fine with me settling up with a credit card at the end of trip. the big cash i had on hand was for tips, curio's (stuff to bring home) etc. but in truth, the curio shop took credit cards as well.

i am going back in october to hunt buffalo, this time i have paid almost all the costs up front. if i shoot a couple extra animals that i had not foreseen, i am sure i will be settling up with a credit card.

i think simply talking to your ph will go a long way into finding a solution that works for both of you.

good hunting,

don

When I travel with a large amount of cash, I carry a $100.00 or so is smaller bills for tips and other small purchases. I then take the larger amount and put it in my food vacuum sealer and seal it up, this takes a large stack of money and shrinks it down to a thin stack easy to hide. If you do run into trouble they will most likely be happy with your small amount of money, and won't look down the front of your pants if you hide your vacuumed cash there. I just got back from Mexico and had almost $10,000.00 in peso's with me, and not one note was bigger than $100.00 peso's, my money vacuumed packed was about 1/2 inch thick.

Something isn't right. The notion that an outfitter will only accept cash in person suggests that something is not right. My first thought is that he's attempting to avoid paying taxes on the funds, he doesn't want a paper trail. I personally would not do business with a person who demands cash in person.

Its already been cleared up MD. The outfitter in question posted above to clarify.

Lots of great suggestions here on communicating until you're comfortable with the situation. Congratulations on fulfilling your dream of hunting RSA, I wish you success! CB

Too many ways to pay then carrying cash.
(1) Cell phone call to your bank to wire the money to the outfitters bank at the end of the hunt. That's how it did it.
(2) Zelle money transfer on your phone (assuming you bank and receiving has the service, mine does). Was not available when I went.
(3) Apple Pay Cash.

I agree.... no need to carry more than you are comfortable with. Consider, Xoom, Western Union, Etc.... cheaper than International Wire from your bank.

Every outfitter should consider setting up a paypal account.
Paypal skims a hefty amount. At least in the States, you had better be very vague on why you are transferring cash. They will not wire money for anything firearm related, you have send it as a gift, and you get no protection from that.

I have sent money to South Africa 7 or 8 times using Paypal with my Amex card and there have never been any issues of any type.
