Mispronounced gun names

Not really a mispronunciation but I was rather too old to have it pointed out to me that there was a double meaning to “Mannlicher”….
Reminds me of a funny incident at the LGS in South Carolina 29 years ago. The shop is a pawnshop, but often had many interesting guns. The owner was a gun guy.

I asked “ Do you have any Ruger 77 Internationals?
The clerk, a guy I regularly dealt with, was puzzled.
I said “You know with a Mannlicher stock?

He firmly looked me straight in the eye and in his distinctive South Carolina drawl said:

“We don’t have any Man Lickers in here!”

I laughed my ass off, and he did too.

I love the American members giving the "correct" pronunciations... :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

The ACTUAL German pronunciation of Koch is: Cou (as in cough) and "g" as in Afrikaans "Gaan kak" or like you're clearing your throat (hawk tah in very recent modern social media parlance :ROFLMAO: )

Sako is pronounced SAH-Ko in Finnish

Leupold is pronounced loo-pold, not Lee-o-pold. They actually used to put this in their catalog, but I think they’ve finally given up.

Is it M1 Carbine or M1 Carbeen?

If I remember right, my grandfather said carbine with a long "i." My dad, who was a Marine in Korea and was issued an M1 Carbine always said "car-bean" with a long "e" sound. Dictionary says both are correct, so I guess it's users choice. I say "car bean" like my dad did.

I've tried to convince guys to say it "Loo - pold" Most of them have said " Lee - a - pold" for so long they just can't.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think it’s not “Loopold” either, that would be the Americanised (simplified) way of saying it.

Isn’t it more something like “Ljewpold” ? This is a German origin name, and “Leu” is more something like “Ljew” or starting with an “l” sound, then soft “j” sound to finish in “ew” like in “ewe”

You could be right, but I’m just going by what they used to print in their catalogs. I guess they probably get to decide their own pronunciation.

Kind of like Koch Industries. Fred Koch decided that Coke was a more Americanized pronunciation, in spite of the fact that his name had historically been pronounced like posh with a hard c replacing p.

For customs is it Remage as in Savage or is it Rem-aage?

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
