I was there when it was born! My friend, Clay Shirley, a master gunsmith and rifle builder for many years had been encouraging me to try a .284 Winchester for a long time and I finally took the plunge. Over the next few weeks I was able to find the time to actually watch him painstakingly craft this rifle from beginning to end. He completely "trued" the Remington 700 action, chambered the 1:8 twist Brux barrel, which was then threaded for the Vias radial muzzle brake and lightly bead blasted. He then installed it in a AG Composites Alpine Hunter Carbon Fiber stock. The finished rifle weighs 7.8 pounds on my bathroom scale and with the brake finishes at 24". I have always admired the skills necessary to do this kind of work but actually watching a true craftsman at work is truly amazing.
After breaking in the barrel I quickly found numerous loads giving me groups in the 1/2-3/4"range at velocities of anywhere from 2700-3100fps with my chosen 150g Berger Classic Hunter bullet. Performance out to 1,000 yards was excellent and I settled on a moderate hunting load averaging 2940 fps. Since my rifle is built on a long action I am able to seat the bullets far beyond what the original design called for and the round performs nearly as well as the 7mmPRC except when loaded with the very heaviest 175plus grain 7mm offerings. Among the provided pictures you will see a target that was shot over an extended period of time with 30 rounds of my hunting ammo. The guys at Hornady said that this is how they judge the true capability of a given rifle, 30 rounds in an extended time frame. The 30 rounds all landed in a circular group of 1.78'. Apparently anything in this range is considered as excellent for any rifle fired in this manner. It certainly is a confidence booster for shooting when it really counts in field conditions! I can also provide pics of a number of tiny groups from and loads ranging from 2800fps to nearly 3100 fps if you desire to see them. I have fired between 300 and 375 rounds and taken loads of game with this rifle.
Why am I selling? Well, I became enamored with the Nexus Rifle developed by the folks at Gunwerks. Their switch-barrel carbon fiber rifles paired with the amazing Revic Radikl scope in 6.5 and 7mmPRC have become my go-to hunting set-up. For the last two years my other deer and elk rifles have been relegated to life in the safe. The others have been sold and I have finally decided to let my .284 go to someone who can appreciate it and put it to proper use.
The gun is in excellent condition with light "smudges" showing in the bead blasted finish here and there from hunting in addition to a little little wear on the bottom metal. Very inexpensive "fixes" if an "as new" rifle is your goal.
I am asking $2800 including shipping to the lower 47 states (California is questionable)
I also have:
*around 200 rounds of brass (Winchester and Petersen) many are prepped and primed
*two bags of (unopened) Winchester brass
*Redding Full-Length 3 die set...$55
*Whidden Click Adjustable Bushing Dies (Brand New)...$210
Wherever possible I will try to bundle price these items to enhance the deal for the buyer.
I will also consider selling these items separately if not taken by the rifle purchaser.
