Maximum point blank range

from a PH point of view...nothing worse then doing the work get into a good spot, put client on the sticks....and then the fiddling starts, focus this twist that turn here....just shoot man!!!!
Excellent point. I bet more animals walk or run away than are missed. And writers seem more concerned with selling you the latest 300 wizz bang calibre with a 2- 50 6 dials to twiddle scope. 1/2 moa is pretty useless if you never get to pull the trigger.

Simple is good for a simple guy like me. I use MPBR to keep it simple. Besides, all my rifles have a MPBR of close to 300 yards using a 6” circle. I don’t have the need or desire to shoot game farther than that. If I ever get the chance to hunt elk or mountain goats I might reevaluate.
In my day I killed thirteen elk. All but one were 70 yards or less. That one was hit (barely!) at 320 yards and tracked down after several hours for a thirty yard finishing shot. By the time I finally got it in the truck two days later, I wished I'd never taken the first long shot. Back then that range was considered unethical and those who boned out animals in the field were slob hunters. My how things have changed. Can't say that I feel it's for the better.
Here's a couple from the class of <70 yards.

You don't need a long range rifle to hunt elk. But long legs helps. :D

Well I fall in to the dial the scope group and hold over crowd.
I took a 375 Ruger to Africa in June of this year for Buffalo and plains game.
The rifle was scoped with the Leupold VX5 2-10 with CDS.
I was skeptical of the system. Is it to good to be true. Is it repeatable?
Well bench testing answered those questions.
I tested out to 200 yards using the CDS and hold over. Out to 125 I was good with a hold on the target. The CDS took the guess work out and allowed for solid hits on the 1” dot.
My zero was for 75 yards.
Muzzle velocity 2550
Bullet weight 300 grains. Barnes TSX

After the Buffalo was down my PH asked that we check zero at 200 and 250.
A quick dial to 200 and then 250 put the bullets on target.
My PH said don’t ever change a thing on your rifle.

I do agree that adjusting the focus and parallax is to much when hunting.
Have your rifle set up before you hunt. Throw that parallax adjustment scope away or give it to somebody you do not like.

@HankBuck
To sight a 243 in I find a paddock with long grass in it that needs mowing.
I hold said 243 by the barrel and swing it around my head then launch it as far into the paddock as possible. A bit like the Olympic hammer throw.
Then tractor and slasher comes along and runs over said 243 stuffing it completely.
Best things to do with a 243 apart from a rebarrel to a better calibre like the 358.
Bob

Wow, you are hard on the mighty .243

Mate, this is Australia. It’s a half decent round with plenty of support, and maybe a few haters.

@MS 9x56
Not all of mine animal witnesses are dead.
There's still a few walking around laughing that I plumb clean missed them at close, medium and longer ranges.
Must have been something wrong with the scope or rifle because I don't miss. Have to blame something
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
Bob

Yeah, there is always those ones you missed, probably still laughing at you. Remarkably it happens when there are human witnesses too. Nothing worse than some ba$tard seeing you miss. It happened to me once.

Only once, I find that hard to believe mate.
Or only once you will admit to
Bob

the caliber/cartridge you are shooting has some influence on the MPBR. a 300 win with 180 gr will and should be different than say a DG rifle 416/458 rifle.

i usually zero at 2.5" high (about) at 100 yards, and i know the drops out to 3-400 yards. then, mostly i just aim and shoot. a longer shot will require a little thought and maybe reference a drop chart.

most relatively flat shooting rifles can be set up like this and forget worrying about bullet drop to 300+ yards.

You only have to admit to the ones where there are witness’s. No witnesses it did not happen.
That’s my story your honor and I am sticking to it.

I can neither confit nor deny I missed that animal you worship.
Respectfully, Perhaps you you could ask said animal for a more factual account.

Mmmm, and where is said witness buried ……..:censored:

He is safe, I was hunting on invite from club members.

The Goat on the other hand made delicious curries.

The back story is I had been away the week before and head shooting Fallow does for the my Mettwurst and Sausages. 3 for 3 using an accurate hand load. I was pretty confident, or cocky.

So a week later I went with a group and they said we can take goats but the landowner wants $30 each goat as they do muster and sell them periodically.

So, ok, I missed the goat using some factory ammo and shooting poorly so I grabbed my hand load and headshot a nanny for meat.

Prior to that I got the only pig from that trip. I have shot a lot from a vehicle and had to step out and stand using the doorframe. Well old mate who was with me tells the story back at camp that I stepped out, yawned, had a stretch and shot the pig. Fortunately that was a bang flop DRT. Headshot stinking smelly old boar. Not a toner, he wasn’t 100kg but he was big and had great big Boof head on him.

And my so called friends think I’m a Pr!ck because I got the only pig for the trip.

I take a hybrid approach with adjustable turrents. I zero at 100, true my ballistics to 600+, and calculate true 3" MPBR. I adjust my turrents for MPBR in my scope for quick shots, and dial if there is plenty of time.

That means the zero stop is always 100 yds, the scope usually sits at +0.3 to +0.6 mils (depending on cartridge), but if it is past roughly 300 yds, the rangefinder will tell me what to dial for. Means I don't have to think for a quick shot, but I'll dial if we are taking a longer shot.

For a capped scope with reticle sub tensions, I'll do a 3" MPBR and use the sub tensions for slightly longer pokes. I no longer have capped crosshair scopes, but I used to use a slightly more generous 4" MPBR.

Each approach allows for little thought on sub-300 yds, and allows for precise longer ones.

Xpedition Archery USED Scrapeline390X Sniper Gray Crossbow XACW1001 - Light Wear - Needs Bolt/Arrow Guide Spring UA5689

If it is in a decent shape, would you be willing to sell it for $100 shipped? IS it missing the retention spring that goes over the bolt?
Thank you Ferenc

Good morning John, I just read your setup procedure for the northstar duplicator ator. I found it very hand and I did learn some things. I have the same machine and I am having a problem i can not figure out and was hoping you could shed some light on the subject.
