Hello everyone. Stopped by my gunsmith yesterday to pickup my rebarreled ZG 47 in 7x57 and he showed me a few original sporting Mausers coming up for sale. Needless to say they are all in original shape. 10mm Mauser with optics and removable cheek piece, singal square bridge milled for quick release of optics. Double set triggers. 9,3x62 Mauser un drilled, super condition. Original short action M98 in 8x51, surely one of the best stalking rifles I have come across. Really like the 10mm and need to make space for it in my safe.

Hi,

Thank you for posting these rifles!!!
The BEST HUNTING RIFLES EVER MADE. Period.
My dream: that 9,3x62!!!!!
Do you know the asking prices?

Thank you again.

CF
I have requested that they authenticate the rifles. Check production dates, confirm all numbers match on all rifles, see if there is documentation on any of them with regards to where they were sold or ordered and if all work was in fact done by Mauser. The 10,86 is a piece of work and so is the 9,3 with that barrel. Asking price i will confirm in a week or so once the authentication is done. The price on the 8x51 Kurz is 4950 Euro, which may seem a lot, but having owned a new M98 I would not hesitate to swop it for any of these older guns, despite what Mauser and Rigby say, they are not the same. Feel, fit and finish is on a diffrent level to the new M98, this is my opinion based on handling both the old and the new .

A little more information on the rifles.
The short action was build in 1914, caliber 8x51K, all numbers matching.
The 10,75x68 matching numbers, build about 1908 Type B with a special order barrel.
The 9,3x62 matching numbers, the trigger assembly has been changed from double set trigger to standard single by Mauser, but the original set trigger were delivered with the rifle, not sure if they come with the rifle now .Build in 1938, Type B, barrel Octagon to round with rib integrated.

Best sporting rifles ever to be commercially manufactured. And unlike today’s gunsmiths (who often simply rebarrel military surplus Mauser Model 98s to different calibers), each caliber which the Mauser Oberndorf Sporter was offered in… actually had a specialized action built just for it.

On a related subject, the modern Mauser Model 98 Magnum is offered in three calibers:
.375 Holland & Holland Magnum
.416 Rigby
.450 Rigby

Mauser should definitely begin offering these again in .404 Jeffery. Sort of as homage to the good old days.

The 9.3 has definitely been refinished.
Decent rifle though for the right price.
What would you consider " right price"? A new Mauser M98 built to this specification would set you back in excess of 14000 Euro, if they are willing and able to build it. Then it still wont be an " original" with history. You can buy a new Ferrari for a million or two, but you cant buy a 68 GTO " refurbish " for under 40 million, all about history, pedigree and availability.

The right price for that gun would be sub 3500 Euro IMO.
“Original with history” is subjective. Sure this rifle is an original Oberndorf TypeB but that’s all its history - unless there is some documented provenance.
TypeBs are the most common of all the Oberndorf sporting rifles so they’re not exactly rare - well, rare compared to Winchesters of course but not all that rare in the grand scheme of things.
9.3X62s are more desirable than most other chambering though.
I would never buy a new made Mauser as long as there are honest examples of originals on the market at vastly lower prices.
Ferrari didn’t make GTOs in 1968
Automobiles are not a very good comparison to firearms.
Modern supercars are so different to sports cars of the ‘50s and ‘60s that they may as well be from other planets. They appeal to two totally different demos. 90% of owners of modern Ferraris couldn’t identify a pontoon Testarossa out of a lineup of Ramblers.
Rifles, however, especially these Oberndorf and the newly manufactured Mauser rifles, are incredibly similar. The new examples attempting to profit on the similarities.

Your opnion is subjective. Winchesters Pre 64 are a dime a dozen in comparison and no matter how hard people try and make it something it is not, it will never be a original Mauser. I know, I have one with history lying in the safe, never use it. The 9,3x62 Obendorf Mauser may be the most collectable of the standard actions, there may be a few around, but not many with the barrel profile and in the condition of this rifle, a custom ordered rifle even in Type B, which makes your 3500 Euro a joke. I have a 9,3x62 Obendorf Mauser Type B too, mine does not come close to this one. Happen to have a new M98 double square bridge too and that too could not compare to the Original, despite what everyone wants me to believe , they are not the same.
I had a look at a Holland and Holland 375 flanged take down rifle in the same gun room (cased), I would pick the 10mm Mauser over it any day of the week even if the H&H is more desirable to most. The price of rifle is directly relevant to the value someone places in it, much like a classic car, some will pay much more for a original because they value the nostalgia and history that comes with it. Good catch, the gtc was from 68.

Not a joke at all.

The part octagon full rib barrel was pretty common on TypeBs.
I had one just like the one you are looking at. Same barrel too but unfortunately did not have the scope rings for the original mounts.
Mine was the 9.3X62 Magnum which was really just the 9.3 loaded hot with a lighter spitzer bullet.
This rifle was totally original finish, no struck down edges or stampings, excellent bore.
Sold for around $3000 iirc. That was five years ago so today I’d think it could be maybe $5K but that one was way better condition than the refinished one you are looking at.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ

What is the minimum you would take.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
