Random question, but I'm hoping someone may have an answer.

I have a German Mauser 98k chambered in .257 Roberts. Looks like it was customized a long time ago. It came with a complex and interesting Stith scope mount (I think a model M3M) that I wish I could use, but it lacks the rings/parts to hold a scope to the bases. And parts appear to be hard to find.

The ridge for stripper clips is still present on the gun. The existing rear hole spacing is ~0.6" CTC and the receiver ring spacing is 0.86" CTC.

Based on what I could find in my searching, most Mauser bases seem to have 0.5" or 0.86" spacing on the rear holes.

Anyone know of a set of Mauser bases that measures ~0.6" for the rear/bridge?

I'm looking at Warne, which has a base set that works with unmodified Mausers with the stripper clip ridge, but they don't publish their hole spacing.

They also have a one piece base for Mausers with 3 tapped holes that might work, but they don't publish the spacing between the rear/bridge hole and the holes on the receiver ring.

I sent them an email to request the spacing info, but I'd like to go ahead and get some bases ordered before deer season ends. :)

Any info is much appreciated.

Best regards,

Matt

I found the Warne spacing chart. Looks like those won't work. Drilling another hole in the rifle to match 0.5" spacing will leave only .01" between the old hole and the new one. This will be an interesting problem to solve.

I dont have an answer for you as far as spacing, but you could have custom bases made or modify existing bases instead of modifying your rifle.

You got my PM about my solution for similar issue when I switched to 1-piece base for my Springfield. I drilled a new hole in the front end of base/rail and used just two screws to attach the base, one into receiver locking ring and one into the dovetail for military rear sight on rear bridge (standard for rear base for Springfield to only have one screw). Two screws and a rail is plenty sturdy enough to withstand 30-06 recoil. Your rifle is 257 Roberts and I'm quite sure just one screw holding the rear base will be sufficient, if you're intent on staying with split bases. So you have a base for front that has correct holes for what's tapped into locking ring?

I think I can find one with correct front hole spacing. Rear hole spacing is the problem. Warne does have a set of bases with correct spacing for front and rear but it’s for a Mauser M18 which looks like a fairly new rifle design. Not sure the contours or height will work on a 98 but may give it a try just to see. Would kind of prefer a one-piece though.

Jerome, do you think my last post in rough camping must maybe shift as an article?

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl
