Curious as to what action was used for the build. Stripper clip port suggests military?

Nice looking rifle. Surprised they didnt do a safety conversion, but what do i know! LOL! Only what i like....but im not a high end rifle builder at all. Really nice looking rifle otherwise.

It's not tapped for a scope so no NEED to change the safety. The military 3-position safety is fine with iron sights. Not the quickest to operate but extremely safe.

Beautiful rifle!!

I have a feeling that the thumb cut out on the receiver wall makes it not possible to import into the USA.

That's a 98 Mauser feature. They all have it. Like millions of rifles ... including mine which has traveled across the border into US several times.

Guns made on commercial actions are importable regardless if they have a thumb cut or not (almost all prewar and many early post war commercial guns will have the thumb cut). Military 98's need to be in the original military configuration and are not importable if sporterized. If you buy a gun with a 98 Mauser type action and want it imported into the US you need to be able to prove it was not a reworked military action. Many of the English makers used commercial actions for their best guns and used reworked military actions for their cheaper guns. I suspect someone bought a gun with a reworked military action and now has a problem with the import process.

You are correct. That is bizarre. I am surprised no one has made an effort to straighten out that silly catch 22. So someone can import a piece of junk SKS but just can't put a nice stock on it? I will make sure I always have my Canadian temporary export permit for Africa when I take my sporterized Mauser hunting in Montana. Crazy.

Hmmm. Is it even possible to determine if a surplus military action was or was not imported prior to 1968 when the import stamp was required? A workaround this poorly thought out foolishness might be to obtain a SF4 for a sporterized military action purchased out of country and then simply go get it. If one has a SF4 for it on return, isn't the owner in theory simply bringing his previously owned gun back into the country? Or is one supposed to check in with the gun when leaving the US? This is all new to me. I have been traveling back and forth across the border with my sporterized Springfield since 1989. Never been a concern and I have been checked several times. But then I'm a bit unique as a US citizen who's also a permanent resident of Canada.

I’m aware of that. I own 3. Moosemind has explained it better than I have. I have noticed on the U.K. auctions they mention that they are not exportable to the U.S.

His point is that it is a military action so there might be an issue as far as a SALE goes. Not sure myself on that. As far as the safety goes they just are not as nice or convenient a set up in my opinion vs 3 postition wing or 2 position side/slide safety...but again....very nice rifle. If it was here i might pursue it a bit harder. Good luck with it either way. You would think it would be a quick seller where you are vs having to import here????
