One step further still: those who would claim any practice is incomparable and too artificial to be of any use in real life situations, should only look at the difference between the Russian conscript thrown into battle after a half day of training and a US military soldier having gone through months, if not years of training before facing their first real combat, and compare their effectiveness levels.
That is in my opinion the single biggest differentiator between the US military and everyone else...
Its not that American DNA is any better than any other country's DNA.. or even that our mindset is superior (we are certainly of a different mindset than many, and are pretty "warlike" compared to other cultures and countries.. but I dont see that as the biggest differentiator)..
The US military is undoubtedly the finest in the world... because of money..
Simply put.. our soldiers/Marines/airmen/sailors/guardians get the finest equipment and the most extensive training comparatively to all other nations (to include other fully developed, 1st world countries)..
Look at the number of live fire rounds a typical US infantryman in just a conventional unit will shoot in a year vs his counterpart in say the UK, French, or German army... Look at how much fuel a US armor unit will burn in a year driving and operating their tanks and APC's vs how much fuel will get burned by a counterpart armor unit in the UK, French, or German army.. etc..etc..
Its not that the US serviceman is any better as a human... he certainly is not...
Its just that he gets A LOT more training and practice in than everyone else does.. and generally speaking (not always the case, but far more often than not this is true) he is provided higher quality tools to get the job done.. not because we love our troops anymore than any other country does.. but simply because we have the money to provide them with the higher quality tools and the much more extensive training, where other countries do not..
Truthfully, Ive been incredibly impressed with how good other countries get with the limited resources they are provided.. as an example, Guatemala's kaibiles are ferocious little buggers.. they are an incredibly formidable fighting force (IMO) that is as capable as many counterpart units in more developed and/or wealthy countries.. and they accomplish that with incredibly limited budgets and incredibly limited equipment.. they train super hard, and are super selective about who gets into that unit..
but.. as good as they are.. they dont hold a candle to the US Army Ranger Regiment.. they dont have a world class gym like each Ranger battalion has.. they dont have an assigned nutritionist, assigned strength coach, assigned exercise physiologist like each Ranger Battalion does these days.. they dont have the same weapons systems, same air support, same budget for ammo, etc.. they dont have access to the same quality training facilities.. dont have access to the same quality trainers.. etc.. the list goes on and on..
But insert a squad of kaibiles into the Ranger Regiment for a year, and give them access to all of the above.. and I'd bet my last nickle that they would be 100% on par with a Ranger squad (perhaps better than some squads)..
