Magnetospeed barrel mount chrono's?

TRied it on DR an it wAS A NO GO.
However, I have a single barrel rifle of same caliber and barrel length as both of my DRs.
Problem solved.
Was it an attach issue or POI/accuracy change?

You also get a hard case with the MV3 and adapters for more variety in barrel thickness.

I have a used MV3 I'll sell. It has a racing stripe & slight crease where a bullet just graized the reader arm. Does not appear to affect function. (I prefer the LabRadar which I also have.)

$135.00 shipped ($120 + 15 shipping) on the used MV3.
I have not used it in 2 years, so if not satisfactory, I'll buy it back less the freight, ( both ways).

^^^^^^GOOD DEAL^^^^^^

The v3 accepts a micro SD card and stores the muzzle velocity in a .csv file. I convert them to an open doc file and save them to my chrono folder. AFAIK, the sporter model requires writing the MVs on paper.
Thank you

To hog patrol,
It was an attach problem.

I have one. Very handy but it does alter the POI. Also you cant use it on a double

There is an aftermarket off barrel unit that attaches to a front rest for problem firearms or those that don't want it on the barrel. My experience, they alter POI 180° to blade.

With the MK, a rod is needed to mount it.

Thanks to all that commented on using the Magnetospeed on a double rifle.

My son was all for it, but since I also have single barrel rifle of the same caliber and barrel length as the two double rifles, I decided just to measure the velocity from the single barrel rifles and call it done.
My objective was an approximate muzzle velocity reading and it was good for that.

No matter what rifle you use it on the POI will shift due to the change in barrel harmonics and extra weight hanging on the barrel/barrels. So once you have worked up an accuracy loads for yout single barreled gun or a load that regulates with your double you check the speed so you can work out your drops at various distances.

On a bolt or single shot, you can also shoot a ladder of loads I usually use 5 shots per weight of powder , to see which one has the best SD and ES. I have found in most all cases that the load with the smallest ES is also the most accurate. On a double you are just looking for the speed once you have a load that regulates.

Will it work on doubles by attaching to side of barrel instead of under. Never used one, just asking.

Range report for MagnetoSpeed vs LabRadar:

Working on loads for my 280 AI this weekend, my buddy brought his LabRadar and I brought my MagnetoSpeed.

LabRadar reported higher MV on every shot, anywhere from about 20 - 40 fps faster than the MagnetoSpeed showed. I'd guess that the LabRadar is probably more accurate, but I believe we're splitting frog hairs 4 ways in this comparison.

There was enough consistency in the delta between what they were both reporting that they both identified pressure nodes in the exact same two places

MagnetoSpeed showed
2637
2637
2636
2627
2639

On that same part of the string, LabRadar showed
2663
2665
2657
2648
2667

I don't find issues with the MS affecting accuracy much. That's 2 groups of 4 all touching, and a 9th right in the middle that's pretty close.

First time I tried factory ammo in my 9.3x62mm using my MS I was a bit shocked when it reported an average MV of more than 100 fps lower than the marketing lies printed on the factory ammo box.

So, the question posed - is it the factory ammo, or the MS that's the problem?

I returned to the range with my "reference load" and the MS. This is my tried and true 180 grain A-Frame handload out of my .30-06 @ an average MV of 2,750 fps. The first round out the barrel MS reported 2,757 fps.

Question answered. MS good, factory ammo bad.

What bullet weight were you using here?

that target was from 160 gr A Frames last week, the ladders from yesterday are 175 gr Game Kings.

You have a ways to go to max then. Should be able to get about 2850fps.

@sgt_zim Damn good shooting. Wouldn't hesitate to reach out a bit with that accuracy.

I got to 2800 fps on this ladder, but the most consistent pressure for the SGKs was down at about 2660 fps

Last weekend my most consistent pressure was just under 3K fps with the 160 gr A Frames. I think i've about decided I'm done testing different bullets. A Frames look to me like they win this competition.

Factory ammo velocities always seem to be overstated to what actually runs through my barrel, just like the velocities listed in the reloading manuals. Probably due to the fact that most factory ammo is tested with test barrels of 26" or so, or some sort of special pressure barrels.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
