Good day AH community!

As we now have the time to reflect on another truly incredible Buffalo hunting season we find ourselves already itching to get back out there and look for the Dugga boys that got away! We had a truly phenomenal season at Madikwe hunting some absolutely breathtaking bulls. Two specific highlights were the hunting of an absolutely ancient bull we had nicknamed "little foot" as well a safari where we were able to take 3 bulls in one safari - unheard of at Madikwe. Once again this season we did not see a lapse in the age or quality of the Buffalo we hunted. Years of hard work are starting to pay off! That's the beauty of having enough space to hide!

We will be hunting a limited quota in the 2025 season as part of our continued management plan.

We also like to make it clear that when a hunter books a Buffalo hunt with us at Madikwe we have no size restrictions/limits. Our focus will always be on age. It is the hunters luck on the day that determines the bull he is destined to meet with. That being said the biggest bulls we have hunted there have measured 44", 45", 45.5", 46", 46", 46.5", 47", 48", 48.5", 51 & 1/4" respectively.

Those of you who have hunted Cape Buffalo will know exactly why it is such an addictive hunt and a hunt that deserves all the respect and prestige afforded to it! If you could bottle the feeling of your first buffalo hunt and sell it you'd most definitely be a wealthy man!

Buffalo are truly a noble adversary and it is for this reason that we at Bayly Sippel Hunting Safaris choose to conduct our hunts to the highest standard. Hard hunting on foot by taking the freshest tracks from the day before. The days are very long, consisting mainly of following tracks at a painstakingly slow pace, sweeping roads & checking waterholes. The hunting is fair chase and we will target old bulls as a preference. The physical demands of the hunt are high. You will require a high level of fitness as well as a good back whilst on this hunt. The bush varies from extremely thick thorn bush to semi-open savannah. We hunt large self sustaining herds however the older bulls tend to walk alone or in small Dugga boy groups.

If you can successfully hunt one of our buffalo you will have bragging rights at having successfully done one of the hardest buffalo hunts in South Africa! All buffalo are different and offer something unique to the client but one thing that is common across the board at Madikwe is quality old Dugga boys. Whether its a scrumcap bull or a 48 inch monster a few hunters are going to get very lucky next year!

Outstanding work gentlemen! These guys work their tails off for clients. Highly recommended.

These guys are top drawer and really work hard for their clients and yet make sure you have a very enjoyable time. Agree with USN above - highly recommended!

So if I am reading this right I would be told to shoot the 1st Buffalo that meets your age criteria be it a 36", scrum cap or 45". Is this correct?
I have done this hunt and certainly not the case. You can pass up a bull if its not to your liking

If you did not want to shoot a scrum cap that is your preference, and you as the client are welcome to decline @Graham Hunter. We will never force a client to shoot an animal. Many times if given the option when looking at multiple bulls we will ask the client if he wants age, size or a nice combo of both. The hunting at Madikwe however is hard enough that most hunters would never pass on a bull that is old enough to hunt. Your opportunities are not plentiful. The likelihood of hunting a small buffalo there is also almost non existent. The genetics are just too good.

I hope we have adequately answered your question.

Kind regards,
Dempsey Bayly & Michael Sippel

Here is a picture I took in Madikwe reserve in 2018. What are the odds of running into a bull like this?
