M98 in 7x57 suited for heavier bullets ?

I couldn’t agree more. I keep scouring gun shows and LGS looking for NOS round nose bullets for all my calibers. Not only are the accurate but they visually seem to hit harder.
@MS 9x56
That's why when I found 2 boxes of NOS Hornady 250gn rn for $66/100 they came home with me.
I'm awaiting @Rick HOlberts review of the 225gn Woodleigh RNSP in his 358 when he returns from Namibia. He's wheels up in a couple of weeks.
Should be interesting to see how they go.
I'm looking forward to trying the same bullet in pigs at 2,880fps later this year. Should be rather interesting to say the least.

It was Linda Lovelace Bob. It really was.
I know it's just showing my age, but I had thought it was the preferred chambering in the Watergate Hotel...

I’ve said it before and at the risk of repeating myself… I have found the Nosler partition 175gr bullet works very well on African plains game. Oryx, quite a few, blue wildebeest, impala, Red Hartebeest,
If I had to choose another bullet I might think of Norma Oryx or Swift Aframe.
I've seen some pretty poor terminal performance results from the Norma Oryx from a member on here. Not sure if he's going to post them or not. It's hard to beat an A-Frame in many scenarios which is why they're in my list to try as well as the Scirocco II's, TSX's, TTSX's, LRX's, and Terminal Ascents.

That said, my rifle is a .275HV so the heavier bullets might not shoot as well, but I'm going to give them a whirl.

I have and use the great since 1972, my only BG rifle for 20 years.
I reloded for it since the start. I used almos all 7 mm bullets available.
Lately I tried the LRX 145 grs. In my M98 Mauser with a CIP specificated barrel, I can load it at 2900 f/s, at entirely safe presure, with an OAL a lot longer than the cartridge standard (because the long free bore and the M98 magazine lenght). It is a serious candidate for an all around Big Game bullet!!

Good luck!

Would like to know the details. My understanding is the Oryx is designed for soft skinned game, while the similar weight Vulkan for thicker skinned. What was he shooting?

I believe it is the other way around. I have used the Vulcan bullets for deer but had jacket separation on boar hogs shot in the grisle shield over the shoulders. I now use the Oryx bullets which Norma advertises as being bonded. So far I haven’t recovered any of the oryx so can’t say for sure.

Yes, of course. I haven't had enough coffee yet this morning. Oryx is bonded, Vulkan not. Idea behind the Vulkan is larger wound channel.

I'll let that member chime in if they want but the info I got was 30-40% mass retention on Impala and other PG at 100yds. They said very accurate, but not happy with the weight retention or terminal performance. Photos I saw of recovered bullets weren't very impressive either compared to what other controlled expansion and bonded bullets do at that range on those PG species. That member isn't the first person to make those statements, but they were the first to show me photos of recovered projectiles clearly backing up their claims.

Would a 160gr not offer plenty of penetration and a flatter trajectory?
Depends on the bullet, monumental or bonded possibly. The 7x57’s reputation was earned using 175 grain round nosed bullets over 100 years ago. Don’t try to fix what’s not broken.

Certainly earned that reputation using RN 175gr but then we realized that pointy bullets are better and that a slightly lighter bullet would be even more better.
The Poms came to that conclusion too they switched from using RN 215gr bullets to MK VII 174gr pointy bullet in their 303’s.

If you’re happy shooting 175gr bullets by all means go for it. But the maths doesn’t lie, 150-160gr pointy bullet is going to outperform a 175gr RN everyday of the week and twice on Tuesday.
