Love or Hate for the 458 Winchester

No love for it here......

458 winchester action is not big enough for 458 lott or 450 rigby. If it is cz 550 manum action you can.
Krish
Not exactly true… Yes I think all of the push feeds and some of the earlier USRAC were long action only but my 2002 Custom Shop 458 is on a Magnum length M-70 action with a shortened magazine box. It actually still has the Magnum length follower in it! So as it sits I can long load 458 WinMags or have the slight modification of replacing the magazine box and it will fully support a 458 Lott or even a 470 Capstick

I said 458 win mag action not 375 winchester h&h action

Winchester 458 magnum o'clock is 3.34
375 hh is 3.60.
Krish
Yes of course, what I was saying is that Winchester made 458’s on the 3.60 action too..
That’s all..
So you can find 458’s on both by Winchester is all I was saying, not trying to say that you were wrong.
Much love to Krish! He’s our Big Big Guy!!!

No love or hate. More like apathy. :-). That being stated, I think a 420 grain CEB safari raptor at appropriate velocity would be bad medicine for buffalo.

I love it as stated many times, only narrow minded people who haven’t used it at length, listened to or read hear say don’t like it.

This season I was using factory loaded Norma .458Win containing 500gr Swift A Frames doing 2116fps & man that put the hammer on a few Buffalo, lifted the killing effect to standard .500NE, normal old White Box Win 500gr from the 90’s used to stop them Ok but this stuff was Hammering them !

Nothing wrong with 458 winchester as it is. It is up to thr rask with modern components. It is in one's mind what they want. ME like the 450 Rigby the best in .458 caliber. I do have the 458 win mag, 458 lott, 450 Rigby. It is just me.looking at 450 Dakota don't know why.

My first big bore was a zastava .458WM. Really light for caliber imo. Sold it eventually (because of the .450 Nitro didn’t see a need to double up).
Now if I had a heap of coin I’d have an M98 built into a .458WM and go full custom. A member here did exactly what is replicate. I think he may be @Ozzy Hunter . Had a .425WR then had a custom WM built.

Tried to post a couple of pictures of mine but the interwebs is playing up, like Troy, it is my first big bore, and one that I built, and it’s responsible for several bruised shoulders on people who think they don’t kick with 560gn projectiles
Gumpy

So true! My Winchester Custom Shop comes in at a heavy 8lbs lol
575gr rounds at 2100ftps will rattle you!

No love or hate because it’s well beyond my recoil tolerance.

However, if considering a 458WM, I would most likely jump up to the 458LOTT to take full advantage of what the 458WM should have always been.

More bullet & powder options with the Lott cartridge. Plus it’s relatively easy to find a R8 barrel for it.

I also stay out of discussions about the cartridge 458 Win mag as much as possible because I have no experience with it, let alone shot one. My first impressions of this cartridge came from the late sixties where some negative reports were written about it, but also about my favorite cartridge caliber 45, meant the 460 Weatherby Magnum. In the meantime I have changed my opinion as far as the cartridge 458 Winchester Magnum is concerned, because among other things, a friend of mine, a PH in Zimbabwe and latter Namibia, native from Germany, who unfortunately died too early, did not comment negatively on it. He also told me that he did not notice any difference when hunting compared to the cartridge 458 Lott.

Love the way 480 gr Woodleigh softs and solids group the same.
Have to agree that stepping down from 500's helps the 458wm. I also shoot 450 gr TSX's in it, but have not used them on game yet.
I handload using IMR-3031 getting 2100 fps over the Chrony with the Woodleighs.
Not the hottest load, but very adequate and accurate. Seems the older I get the the the happier I am to stop on a good load before I get into the "hot" category.
Recovered one soft from buffalo last year that weighed 450 grains and was 1.25” diameter.
Very happy with that. I think it is a fine round with our modern reloading components.

Apologies for the detour.

@Hunter-Habib - In the below picture you are showing the difference between the steel jackets on bullets. For those that don't know (like me), can you please explain the bullet construction of a steel jacketed bullet? Is it really made of steel? I've read that they've been made of several materials and then coated with copper for corrosion resistance. Wouldn't a steel jacket damage the rifling or is it soft enough to not cause harm?

I would not hesitate to use a 458 wm nowadays, reloading my own ammo with modern powder and bullets, no problem.

Hello, My wife and I hunted with Marius 2 years ago. He fit us into his schedule after a different outfitter "bailed" on us. He was always very good with communications and although we didn't end up meeting him personally, he called us multiple times during our hunt to make sure things were going well. We were very happy with him.

Reach out to the guys at Epic Outdoors.

They will steer you right for landowner tags and outfitters that have them.

I have held a membership with them for years and they are an invaluable resource.

Way better that asking random people on the internet...WAY better

Skydiver386,

Did you ever find your 30-06 CZ550? I own a fairly solid conditioned one, if you wanted to talk.
