What month(s) would be recommended for a Lord Derby Eland hunt?...Operator suggestions? Anyone to stay away from...any other general knowledge or advice pertaining to this hunt welcome.

I’ll be hunting one this January. For dark mane they said January is best. Earlier in January the better for rut, even Christmas. January is also cooler. You can hunt them through March but it’s supposed to become brutally hot and leaves stop making it very noisy then. Each concession and camp will have different game movements at different times making them better or worse depending on outfitter.

I am also going in January. Worked best for my schedule and the weather where I live. As mentioned the season is generally Jan-March

JKO Safaris provided good result for me in January 2022. I'd warmly recommend to contact them.

Interesting that some have heard January is best for black manes and peak rut; I’ve always heard February and that’s when I’m booked for in ‘24. I’m hunting with Alan Vincent in mid-February on Mayo Nduel. Alan believes that is Mayo Oldiri’s best concession and time of year for a big LDE. We had to book it nearly a year ago to get Nduel for these dates. Alan has been hunting Cameroon for about 10 or more years, tells me it’s one of Africa’s best hunts. Alan also tells me that in general, bigger bulls are taken where we are hunting than in the Faro region, though both are very good.

I have a friend who has taken several LDE, most recently last February on Pierre Guerini’s Faro concession where he took a fabulous bull that missed 50” by just a small fraction of an inch. He told me he was able to pass on more than a dozen bulls before taking his giant bull. Personally, I’d also give Xavier Vannier of Faro Safaris consideration. Club Faune is also well regarded for their long term operation inCameroon.

I’m sure your PH knows what he’s talking about, but when I originally booked my hunt with Mayo Oldiri (for 2021) this is what Raquel said. I do not know what camp I will be hunting.

The earlier, the best for the eland hunt, so if you don’t care much, I would suggest: Douala days in/out: From Jan 3 to 18, or from Jan 17 to Feb 1 (SCI show dates). They can also take end Jan – beginning Feb, but early January is better and mid Jan better than end Jan.
The best time to hunt for eland with full black hair is late December into mid February

That’s very interesting. I do know that Mayo Oldiri has one concession, Mayo Vaimba IIRC, that is supposed to be good for LDE and is better earlier like in January. As I understood it, due to seasonal movements, Vaimba is best in January, but Alan wanted to take me to Nduel in February, so we are booked for Feb 9-23 in/out. Perhaps it’s as simple as Alan liking Nduel more? My guess is we will both have very good hunts. Who will be your PH?

Hi Sir,

We have been hunting LDE for more than 15 years to more than 120 SCI clients with a 100% success so far. We are located in the Faro region. I will PM you to give some more info !

Best regards,

Romain
