I am looking for recommendations for an ethical operator for fair chase walk and stalk plains game hunting. I am completely open minded about the species I hunt, but I would like to hunt native species endemic in the area with minimal use of vehicles, ideally not in a farmed or high fenced area. I am happy for something physically challenging and I am not really interested in hunting over waterholes or from blinds or vehicles. To be clear, I am not judging those who do, it just isn't what i am looking for.

I am happy with very basic accommodation and a spike camp would suit me fine. Something like Kai Uwe-Denker or Natasha Illum Berg write about.

I am not interested in big numbers or unusual trophies, more the experience of being in the bush. I would be very happy with a well earnt kudu or an eland in a week The wilderness areas of Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe or Mozambique would be great, but I am on tight budget.

Any ideas? Many thanks.

Have look at some of the Namibia outfits. Very good, resonably priced operations with large open areas

Economic doesn’t work very well for low fence, high quality hunts at a low price.
Sure you may be happy with one nice kudo in a week, but the outfitter, ph and staff need to make a living. So, that will put you in the high daily fee, low trophy fee area.

How tight of budget are you talking about?

As mentioned Namibia may be your best bet.

I would have to agree with a central Namibia hunt.

Me and @Mekaniks both hunted together at @KHOMAS HIGHLAND HUNTING SAFARIS in 2023

I went in May of this year again and would push over 15-20 miles a day. If you ask to not hunt much from the truck they will walk you until you beg to call for the truck haha.

If you stick to Oryx and Hartmanns Zebra and Kudu in that part of Namibia it will be all lowfence and free range. Maybe not the full plains game bag that say East Cape hunt in SA can offer.

But hunting Oryx and Hartmans zebra in the mountains is very very sporty.

@GAME 4 AFRICA SAFARIS would be my recommendation along with @tsala safaries and @ Fronteer

I fully expect to pay a high day rate, I just can't afford Natasha Illum Berg in Tanzania!

IMO, many RSA companies would accommodate your request.

I've hunted with this outfit with my favorite hunting buddy.

He did, exactly what you want to do.

I hunted with my wife, and she wasn't into walking 20 miles a day, so we found game from a Land Cruiser, and got out and started stalking.

Check out Kowas Safaris in Namibia. Huge areas. Jacques is adamant about not shooting off the truck. You will walk your stalks for sure. We had some stalks that were probably 1000 yards for sure and I am sure you could lengthen that if you want. As others have said, Namibia with relatively large areas, even on farms, is probably going to be your best bet budget wise imo.

Kalahari Safaris Namibia (one of the sponsors here). Janneman will be happy to take you for a nice walk to go "have a look". You will have a great time and earn some great memories and trophies.

Safe hunting

Another vote with dchum for:

Khomas Highland Hunting and Fishing Safaris of Namibia.

We would love to welcome you to Kalahari Safari. All hunting is spot and stalk- fair chase ethical hunting in the savannah plains of the Kalahari. You will be the only hunter in camp (we do not mix hunting parties) so hunt is tailor made for your expectations. All hunting on foot and no shooting from a truck. We have 19 different species- and big eland! Look forward to hear from you. Janneman

For a fair chase walk-and-stalk hunt on a budget, focus on Zimbabwe or communal conservancies in Namibia. Contact operators directly and emphasize your preference for minimal vehicle use, no high fences, and spike camps. This style is often more affordable and aligns with the experience you seek. Avoid Botswana and South Africa for this type of hunt - fences and high costs are common there. Good luck!

The usual way of safari is to drive in vehicles, observe animals, then walk and stalk. From 100 meters up to whatever.
So vehicles will be there.
If you need more walking, starting from camp, you will need additional days.

If you dont like fences, go to Namibia, and clarify this with the outfitter.
South Africa is mostly fenced in. Namibia has free range, low fence for cattle (no big deal for animals to jump over), and high fence.
So, find an outfitter in Namibia, ask simple questions - what animals he has out of the fence, and if OK, go there. There are plenty of vetted Namibian sponsors here on the forum.

Plenty of outfitters/areas in common destination countries that can satisfy your requirements- just ask specific questions when contacting. After hunting on foot on a 200k acre high fence property, you might re-assess your preconceived notions. Even hunting on foot on a 10k acre high fence can be daunting in rough, broken terrain. Hunting low, cattle fenced areas with no high fence can be misleading in that while the animals aren’t restricted where they go, you may be. Something to keep in mind.

Coutada 9 in Mozambique with Mokore Safaris. One of the best operators in Africa and a great area for what you are looking for.

Same for Kansonso area in Zambia with Fico Vidal. Check my hunt reports.

I did something like you describe with PH Shingi and Elephant Trails Safaris in Zimbabwe.
My buddy was hunting buffalo while I was following along with the tracking and taking whatever else we came across. There were several 10-12 mile days in mountainous terrain that was very challenging. We chanced on a nice kudu the first day after only walking a couple of miles. By day 3 we were concentrating on buffalo and passing up chances at tracking or even stalking plains game.
Camp was a nice lodge and individual stone huts with thatched roofs and running water so it was a bit more civilized than your requirements.
I never saw a fence except for small cattle corrals in villages. My buddy wanted the wilderness experience above all.
