Looking For An Inexpensive Old Beat Up .375 Rifle

I think it is amazing how folks on AH are willing to help each other!

I saw an Interarms MKX at a shop the other day, nice shape, a consignment gun $700.00 out the door IIRC. If interested let me know and I'll get you some info.

Thanks Bob, but still out of my price range at the moment. I really do mean Beat up! Figure it someone has one that got dropped and cracked the stock or left out and rusted and it was basically a door prop they might part with it for a few hundred, then I could spread the cost of restoring out over a few years.

Considering your budget is nil and you want to build it, I think you have a single answer. A k98 you can sporterize. Eventually you'll have a $350-$400 barrel charge though, and a tremendous amount of hand labor.

To me $3-400 is neither nil (Can't all be rich) nor unreasonable if a rifle is currently in unshootable cond. Granted the chances of a rifle of this type being in this cond is nil, but I'm not in a rush and have time to wait it out. Part of the reason for posting it now was due to knowing it could take time. Right now saving for my up coming safari in Aug is more important than dumping $700+ on a rifle I wont be bringing.

I'll keep my eye out for a cheapie!

A Mauser action in the white without barrel and with no stock is about what, $275?

I see in the white cz550 as a barreled action in .375HH for $680.

In both cases I'm not sure how you'd get a finished gun for less than $1200 plus dozens of hours of labor assuming you have mill, lathe, reamers, no-go gauges, stock tools, etc.

So the puzzle would be, what in .375 exists that is ugly but shootable as-is so you have all the parts you need, but is frugal. Answer would be a whitworth / interarms perhaps. $650 is as cheap as I've seen them because that's what the distressed used parts are worth.

Not being negative, just trying to figure out what to get you for your price target and I'm not sure?

It's like asking for a Ferrari for $5000. No matter how bad it is, a junk yard will strip it and sell the parts for more than the price target. I don't know how to find you a .375 for cheaper than scrap value but I'll keep thinking.

As I said I know it is the mythical beast, but its where I'm at at this point and theres no rush. I thank you for showing an interest and trying to help. I do appreciate you continuing to look into it. Who knows maybe it wont happen, but later I might be in a position to get something better, anything is possible

I will have .375 and ,416 encore barrels shortly, thanks to Dave, to get me started. If anyone comes across a used frame at a good price please let me know

What did you do, wave your magic wand, Rook? You really get into stuff, don't you! Don't know how you came across that so quick, but I'm messaging them. Thank you

I know these are out of your price range a little, but they give you some Ideal of what you can get. Find something like this that some nitwit with a screwdriver or a lathe had his way with and you could get a "shooter" for less.

Yup those are nice, thanks for putting them up. As I said I'm in no rush here, shouldn't even spend any money til after my hunt. Didn't really expect this kind of response in such a short time. Definitely underestimated to overall willingness to help on here. I am waiting to hear back on the one rookhawk brought to my attention. That one is more than I expected by far for the price range I was looking at

So it looks like the Sako is a scam. Weird email address, doesn't speak English well, only will take a money order. Not really a surprise I guess. It's just as well though. I've decided to wait at least until after the hunt to do anything which is as it should be. Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated

Beware anything on armslist...too many scammers. Only ship from a FFL, after verification and send funds to the FFL to be disbursed after shipping, all in all, to me it is too risky to even consider anything on that site.

This is the first time I have looked on it and I gathered that pretty quickly. Like I said I wasn't any rush, so I'm certainly not taking chances on this. I will wait til after the trip then see what comes up from better options

Keep your eyes open and something will turn up. Earlier this year I bought a new never fire .375 Ruger by Howa for $400 with a set of dies and a box of shells to boot. The trigger is much better than what I expected. Not a bad rifle overall. Bruce

I seem to remember selling one just like that.....

Yes and I thank you for it! Bruce

For those in the know, and sorry Albert for the slight hijack of your thread, How well does the Whitworth compare to the BRNO?

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
