Does anyone know of any taxidermist or artist who makes life sized lion head/pedestal mounts that are realistic? There is one in the US, but they are North of $10,000, so that is out of the question for me. I'm wondering if anyone in SA (or anywhere else) produces them and is more affordable. There is a guy in Israel that is very good, but he's $4000-6000.

I do not know, but I am interested in the Israeli guy you mentioning. Could you DM me his contact or the link to his site?

I don't know any but would think $4000 is a very good price if it is excellent work like the couple I have seen done ?

Don't forget they are starting from scratch with no hide or hair from you but you want it to look real !

Kanati Taxidermy in Pennsylvania.

Kanati was the first that I knew of to make such a mount. They are expensive but I do not think you are going to get around that. It is done by hand. They are here at SCI.

These guys were in Dallas I believe and we were looking at their elephant. I thought the lion would feel like Barbie hair or something weird like a doll but it didn’t. (Yes, I was petting the lion). IMO it looks even better in person.

Yes, the guy from Israel is amazing. He does so many animals besides lion.

I saw some lion replica mounts somewhere and they looked like a child's stuffed animal mounted on the wall for $4000. I don't know who made them.

Kanati is over $10,000, which is out of my range after the cost of hunting the lion itself.

I agree the guy from Israel‘s work looks amazing. I did a little research on them and his are all “no kill” replicas and seems to be ant-hunting, especially if reading all the comments. Of course this is just my opinion. Kanati actually does their work from pictures and measurements of actual animals for their customers, but yes they are out of my range too. I guess if I ever get to hunt lion it will be LOTS of pictures.

I contacted the Israeli guy. He has no problem whatsoever on working on replicas of sports hunted trophies. Just said to have as many pictures from multiple angles as possible.

I think I will contact him in the future. I have enough pictures so that is not the problem. But my priority is elsewhere as in saving for the next big trip.

10k for what type of mount, the last full size replica mount I had priced was over 20k.

Prooobably just posing... Taxidermy has a very controversial image in the public eye so it makes sense that he'd present that, up-front, on his official website. As soon as you say "replica," no one cares.

The woman that was the taxidermist for the Milwaukee museum (featured in the documentary "Taxidermy" on Vimeo) did a replica of Samson, the Gorilla at the Milwaukee Zoo after he died. It's on display at the museum and it won best reproduction in the world at an international competition. Her name is Wendy but I can't remember her last name.

I'm not sure if she is still working as a freelance, but she certainly is incredibly qualified.

I'd be remiss if I didn't plug the Milwaukee Museum. She was I think the last on-staff taxidermist at a major museum in America. All the museum's exhibits are dioramas that feature loads of taxidermy. Sadly, multimedia and IMAX have made this form of learning out of fashion today but Milwaukee is still one of the best if you want to see great taxidermy in all the exhibits.

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
