Hunting reports

hi all, i am going on my first lion hunt with my dad in October... I am extremely exited as this is my first safari on a farm besides my dads and i am also extremely nervous because i know lions are dangerous animals and anything can go wrong at any moment. I will be using my dads 9.3 as i will also be hunting some other species while i am there. he is taking his .416 and his .300 windmag which i could also use for the other species i will be hunting.
Do you guys maybe have any tips or exiting stories to share about your lion hunts?
i look forward to hearing from you!

Looking forward to reading your report. I will be hunting Lioness next year, so I will like to see what others have to say.

One point I'd like to make is to ask the outfitter for any info/tips he could share with you. He is after all the one who is going to accompany you on this hunt.

You adrenalin is going to be pumping! I'd practice jogging on the spot for 20 seconds then pick up your rifle and see if you have a good site picture and steady. The more you practice "under pressure" shots the more you'll be comfortable when the time comes. breathing and muscle control will be paramount in controlling the adrenalin.

P.s..... this quality advice comes from someone with ZERO lion kills to his name! But it is something I would do in your position.

Hope it goes to plan and look forward to your report.

I know nothing about hunting in Africa or lions, but I just heard a podcast about lion hunting with Kevin Robertson on The big game hunting podcast.
Just thought it might be of interest.

End of next month will be my turn to hunt lioness I have been on those hunts before with clients long ago but this will be my first own lion.

Listen to your PH and don't panick keep muzzle safe always. Never walk up to a suppose to be dead dangerous game animal without refilling the magazine and keeping the rifle loaded.

I have been on two lion hunts with friends (not shooting myself).

When you face a big cat, it is exciting, just keep calm and follow the PH´s advice, he has been through this a few times.

Having just hunted one myself, here are a few things that I learned.

#1 - Be very comfortable with your PH. If you don't understand his mannerisms and tone, learn them before you hunt the lions. Everything will be moving pretty quickly, and even if you aren't nervous, your brain still will not be clear. There are new sounds and sites and you just don't react as sharply.

#2- When you shoulder your rifle, the safety goes off with it. Be ready to shoot.

#3 - Don't waste your time helping them look for tracks. You really can't help them there, but you can spot the lion if your head is up.

#4 - Don't take a bad shot. Make sure you're comfortable with the first one. You're much better to let the cat get away, than have to chase a wounded one.

#5 - Very good shoes. We walked 15-18 Kil a day.

#6 - Have fun, it goes by quickly.

hunting a lion in 23. Can’t decide to hunt him with my scoped 375 or my DR in 500 NE with red dot sight. Appreciate everyone’s thoughts?

Breath, follow through with your shot, and don’t stop shooting. You see the lion, keep shooting, and when you are not shooting, reload. Oh and have fun :)

Alright it's my turn on this one. Any other pieces of sage advice? I'll leave for my hunt this weekend.
If tracking (advice above is good):
- Confirm with your PH exactly where to shoot.
- Best chance is at first encounter, after that they are on to your game.
- When getting close, approach single file (at last second, PH will probably fan out to prevent shooting accidents). Lions are still animals, multiple aggressors can make them run.
-Be aware of your surroundings, they blend in very well into tall grass
-Enjoy your time, it’s fleeting

Rare Breed, a Scoped 375. You don’t need a 500 for a lion, the 375 is close to perfect. I’ve only hunted lions twice, successful once. Most of the 38 days I spent hunting them, I was carrying a 338 win mag, which is also excellent for lions where legal. As it turned out, I shot mine with a 416, but that was more random than by design. The 416 was excellent for lion, but a lot more than necessary.
