I got the bug to return to Africa either in 2023 or 2024. This time my Primary animal is Leopard. here is my questions...Since I will be at the DSC what a great time to investigate some of the referrals from AH
1. What country for a large male trophy?
2. What PH's should I be talking too?
3. Nice accommodations for my wife if she decides to come. She had a stroke several years ago, knee replacements, back surgery. She is mobile but she wouldn't be able to join me on a stalk and I would feel more comfortable with her having her own guide and experience the beautiful country while I am hunting. She can be taken on excursions to see wildlife, elephants etc and be amazed with all the splendor and beauty Africa has to offer.

Thanks for your comments in advance

Jacques @JKO HUNTING SAFARIS conducts leopard hunts in Namibia and Zimbabwe. I’d say overall that the cats in Zim tend to be bigger but his clients have taken some nice sized cats in Namibia too. Cats in Namibia are taken over bait, in Zimbabwe dogs can also be used.

JKO will be at DSC in booth number 927. We would love the opportunity to speak to you in person about a leopard hunt and discuss accommodations at the different camps. Jacques has worked with clients with fairly limited mobility and can make sure your wife is taken care of.

Hope to meet you in Dallas!

Phil

Nick Nolte in Namibia. Arguably the highest success rate in Africa. Lovely comfortable lodge and your spouse will love Isabelle. A side trip to Etosha is an easy add and your wife will love the wildlife.

A second leopard expert is Jamy Traut. He too operates in Namibia and like Nick, will make sure the hunt reflects your spouse’s needs.

Both will be at SCI and DSC.

I think you need to decide if you want your best opportunity at a leopard or comfortable trip with touring for your wife or if she’s ok just to sit in a comfortable camp while you hunt. Charlton Mccallum safaris has a great reputation in Zimbabwe. Their newsletter for 2022 had 100% success on leopard, but areas will have tsetse flies and not the best for general game viewing/touring. Jamy Traut safaris Kaokoland concessions are huge and extremely wild with a lot of leopard. They could likely arrange some touring for your wife there but you’ll travel huge distances to find pockets of game near water. The scenery is beautiful though. Ranch hunts in Namibia would give most options to your wife, but these will also have the lowest success rates depending on outfitter, generally 50-75% success because cats are educated by cattle farmers and usually only taken at night. Waterberg National park might give you the best of high success and options for your wife, but you’d need to ask Jamy Traut safaris when their lease ends. If a big leopard was my goal I’d look into kafue in Zambia, but I haven’t hunted there in 15 years to recommend an outfitter, again though probably limited options for your wife, but high success on leopard in concession areas.

Feel free to chat to me at DSC we are sold out for 2023 but I do have a tag remaining for 24’ our success is one of the best in the industry….
We have been hovering around 97% success on Leopard over the last 18 years.

With 100% success every year since 2016.
We have 5 - 6 tags available every year. (35 back to back successful safaris)
We only harvest age appropriate Leopard as approved by the ecologist in the park.

Hope you have a great day.
My very best always
Jaco

You should look at hunting in Zambia, great populations and good success rates in luangwa and kafue.

Zambia has big leopard but perhaps not the most luxurious camps for your wife.Comfortable but not luxury. Namibia is more civilised on the camps but maybe a less wild atmosphere. Zimbabwe could get you a big cat and maybe a mix of luxury in a wild setting. Save Valley Conservancy would be a good bet-Mokore camp is pretty civilised and easy to move around and Sango camp is pretty luxurious. Both those place can easily arrange an extra guide for a photgraphic safari for your wife- I sometime do extra work with them doing exactly that when I have a few days to spare. PM me if you want contact details.

There are a couple of pretty luxurious camps that would suit their preferences.

The majority however are comfortable and rustic.

Have you also decided already on the way you wish to hunt leopard? From a blind or over hounds?
If the latter is of interest, Mapassa safaris are one of the best houndsmen of Zimbabwe. They hunt in the Ingwizi conservancy, close to the Botswana border. They have very big cats there, last year a leopard world record was shot there. If you are interested I'll pm you their contact details.

I have a couple tags left in prime areas of Zimbabwe’s lowveld with high success in huge cats, traditional hunting , wonderful camp and a game rich area. I unfortunately will not be at DSC as I have early elephant hunts otherwise we could have caught up and chatted about your safari
Drop me a whats app or email
Cheers

Thanks so much for everyones info. I have several of the PH'S info and look forward to seeing and speaking with them in person at DSC. I am leaning more to Zimbabwe than Namibia mainly because not looking for hunting on a large ranch but in a Conservatory.
You guys always gives me the answers I want and this website is the best .

I would recommend Zimbabwe, Zambia or Tanzania. I’m sure if you ask for nice accommodations you will get what you pay for on a safari. Look at references and past success. I would choose an experienced outfitter.

I second your thoughts on Nick Nolte.

I also believe that Namibia is hard to beat price wise for Leopard IF you choose the right outfitter that is a true cat specialist and actually have a chance at one (unfortunately, we all know there are some outfits there that will sell leopard hunts and not have the knowledge to follow through or sometimes even a tag. But, due diligence is required for any safari!). With the right one, you have a real chance at getting your cat, but if not than you still have a heck of a plains game safari (yes, probably slightly higher priced than targeting plains game alone, but not by much) without the massive base price tags of a leopard safari in other countries. Worth a try IMO

Manny,
Ya got the bug eh?! . . . join the club!
Food for thought in reply to your three questions . .
1. There is no shortage of countries where you have a good possibility for a large male:
Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia are the first ones that come to mind
2. Speaking from only first-hand experience, I took my second leopard in Namibia in 2016
Jacques Strauss was at that time the "junior PH" on the hunt (that's him with our cat in the attached photo) but several things were clear:
Jacques has really "cracked the code" regarding leopard hunting. After observing his attention to detail, knowledge, and absolute passion for hunting leopard, I can think of no one better.
I've subsequently returned and hunted with him as the safari operator/PH for plains game and experienced his own operation firsthand. His company is Kowas Adventure Safaris, and you can find numerous reviews here on the forum of hunts with Kowas', and videos on YouTube. If I were researching a leopard hunt, I'd definitely add Kowas to the short list of those you should consider and start dialogue with. Jacques will exhibit at DSC, so you can discuss with him firsthand there.
3. Kowas' lodge in the Kalahari, is very comfortable and I believe you'd find they'll do a great job of looking after your wife during your safari.
