Left William Evans 5 Hours Ago After Buying My First English Box Lock

My trip to WR agency was the first time I had ever shouldered a shotgun north of 100k. I can only say that I could justify a second mortgage to own one! I swear that shotgun would bring home a limit of quail all by itself, but I would feel privileged to tag along with it anyway.lol

Wonderful classic English boxlock! Can't tell you how happy I am for you, and what an excellent choice you made. It will take just a bit of time to get familiar with it. Don't be frustrated. It is like moving from a broadsword to a rapier. When it clicks in, it will be deadliest thing you have ever used.
Yes even just handling it in the shop and bringing it to the shoulder, it felt totally different than any gun I have ever shot. For more than a year now I have read the threads from you and others that talk about balance. The two books on box locks I have read so far mentions balance it seems on every page or two. As soon as I picked up this gun along with one or two at Westley also, I could immediately feel what I had been reading about all this time. One of the gunsmiths that I observed while at Westley Richards, was going through the balancing "test" with a double still in the white and non oiled stock. Very un technical, place your finger under the hinge pin, and check the balance, if it is off, make necessary adjustments. Unfortunately for me, it will probably be January before I receive the gun, even though I'll be home the end of November.

Brilliant purchase or should we say "investment", you know what would happen to those stocks next to a fire place in Africa!!!

Congrats on an extremely nice shotgun! Hope you have much enjoyment from your time spent in the field.

Congratulations, its a beauty!

Congrats on the purchase.....now to get it home.

Red Leg,

Your comments make me want to get one!

Congratulations!

What is the wood? Looks too light in color to be walnut.
To my knowledge it was all Turkish Walnut, but could have been different grades. We didn't really talk about it since I wasn't haven't a gun built or restocked. Just thought it weird that they would place something so valuable in the confines of a fireplace!

Wheels you are absolutely right, Red Leg has a gift of gab and a command of the English vocabulary that always draws me to want to read his posts regardless of the subject matter. I may not even understand!!! But they are still fun to read!!!

Fine looking gun, congrats !

Best thing about William Evans other than the beautiful guns is that down the side street it's on in St James is the original martini bar in the Dukes hotel just behind the store!

Not a big drinker, but if I ever make it back to William Evans, I will force myself to indulge in at least one, because I am there if no other reason!

Congrats on the purchase!!!

It was known to be Ian Fleming's hangout when he was working on the first James Bond book hence "shaken not stirred"... go there first and you might end up with a pair of shotguns next time you go to W.Evans ! congradul;ations on your purchase !!

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
