Leather work advice need - Elastic cartridge holders

I'm toying with the idea of making a leather 5 round cartridge carrier with the loops being made from elastic. My concern is that most of the commonly available elastic is cheap rubbish that'll be lucky to last more than a couple of years. I recently came across a supplier who stocks equestrian girth elastic. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this or suggestions as to the best material to use. What do the professionals use?

I agree. Most elastic is terrible. I too use the same type of elastic I use for horse gear. I have one slide I built around ten years ago that is my daily user. Still has the same elasticity as when it was made.

Don’t know if it’s the same stuff, but if it is use it. I get mine in 100 yard rolls from weaver leather. Panhandle leather in Texas will sell it by the yard.

Many thanks. I'm not in the US, so the Texas supplier won't be of much use. However your photo is identical to stuff being offered over here . Sounds like it will be the way to go ( and yes the local supplier also sells it by the meter). Fairly expensive in small quantities, but I'm happy to pay for good materials rather than throw junk.

I don’t right now. I’m currently building a new leather shop. It’s about 3 months from being finished. After it’s done I plan on building 30 or 40 of those slides right away. I will whip some up for the Lott though.

Yep….That is the exact same stuff. You will like that material a lot. Get more than you think you will use. You will find other uses for it.

I built the one for myself when I made yours off of your idea, and it has become my favorite sheath.

If you do a slide that will accommodate 308/270/30-06 sized cartridges… I’ll buy a couple of them off you as soon as they are available… those look great!

Perfect. The picture I posted is 9.3x62 so that would be the size you need. I will stitch some together as soon as I finish this shop up.

I’m going to throw out there as well. I’ve been getting enough requests and private messages, not only on this thread but several others. I’ve been in contact with Jerome; as soon as my new shop is finished and I can actually build again. I’m going to become a sight sponsor. I just don’t want everyone to think I’m poaching a ton of business off of AH without contributing back.

I’m going to build a new website. I let my old saddlery website go years ago, and got enough business off of word of mouth. With this last move and my new shop I’ve decided to take the opportunity to reinvent my leather business, and concentrate on hunting/ safari leather instead of cowboy gear. I’m still going to build saddles on a limited basis, but I’ve been enjoying building these other items.

I’m guessing it will be January or February before I have a new site operational. I’m going to have to find someone who likes computers help me with that stuff.

And I’ll take one for 375 H&H as well as one for 416 Hoffman. They’ll probably be the exact same holder as those 2 cartridges are very similar, other than bullet diameter.

I am in agreement rookhawk. I am not currently set up to build for the next few months. I have been in contact with Jerome about becoming a site sponsor upon the completion of my new shop. That will happen before any orders are finalized. I just don’t want to officially sponsor until I have the ability to fill orders.

I do feel like this thread accidentally turned into some decent market research though, and finalized my decision about becoming a sponsor.
