Knives - Why?

I keep a pocket knife and a Victorinox multi tool with me all day everyday. When I fly with carry on only I buy a box cutter at the first stop after leaving the airport. I’d rather have a knife and not need it.

The non-African guided hunts I’ve been on my assistance in skinning has never been asked for and no matter how many animals I’ve skinned they’ve skinned more. I figured I would be as much in the way as trying to change the air filter while the mechanic removes the transmission.

Sure would feel silly hunting without a knife though.

If I can’t carry a handgun, I’m damn sure carrying a fixed blade to get out of a corner. @Von Gruff JT Ranger and pocket Ranger are two of my favorites. They work equally well for cutting biltong and opening a can of snuff!

I would never not carry a fixed blade knife in a hunting scenario, but I can see me being an outlier on the issue.

I carry a folding pocket knife every day and certainly think a knife is necessary while out hunting. My hunting belt has a decent sized fixed blade and leatherman in leather sheaths. Fixed blade sits right behind my extra ammo pouch on the right and leatherman on my left. There are 1,000 uses for a knife on a hunt and I don't want to have to ask the skinner to borrow his every time I need one...

I keep a Multi Tool and a old Case pocket knife in my Safari Vest along with some other goodies including a half roll of TP

Without being too dramatic, I carry a knife (a particularly well designed one thanks to our friend @Von Gruff ) because I can't carry a handgun. On two different occasions, on two different hunts, once in Rundu on the Angola border, and once just outside Beira, Mozambique I was watching the vehicle while my PH was in a store picking up supplies. On each occasion, I was aggressively approached by a local drunk. In both instances a partial draw ended any escalation. I should note, that I have had a good bit of training in the combat use of a knife and am absolutely prepared, if necessary, to use one - just like one of my handguns.

I have also been on two leopard follow-ups. Fortunately, I did not need it, but having an easily accessible blade in such a circumstance is a good thing.

The JT Ranger model by @Von Gruff captures my requirements perfectly.

End edc pocket knife is as necessary as pants so of course there is ALWAYS one in my back pocket. I recently updated my EDC folder with a custom by a very tallented folder specialist so some bling on this one as a belated retirement gift to myself

I have not ever been in a situation where I had guides etc so have always carried one of my own knives when venturing out hunting so for the animals I hunt, the Light Hunter is my go to. I have taken a very real liking to the pocket ranger though so if I was to be in a situation where something more than a animal dressing knife may be needed that would definitely be my choice.

You don´t really need it, but, I am a knife fan, and would feel naked without one. Besides, you never know.

So, a light Victorinox folder and a small 4 inch blade on my belt, and a large Victorinox multi-blade in my backpack.

@Red Leg I like the idea of it for protection as it sounds like you have been in some rough places for your hunts etc . My only overseas trip was South Africa and an eye opener. The PH was always looking out for us in town. Maybe we were to trusting of the locals.
I see a knife or handgun as a good deterrent unless the other person can use it against you. For those of us not trained or experienced it could easily happen. My other concern is getting locked up /investigated in one of those countries.
But of you need it/or anyone needs to protect yourself and stay safe!
I like the cross draw sheath concept as you could carry a short fixed blade out of the way. (Yet to order)

No longer will hunters have to go into the woods with an entire toolbox full of items (screwdrivers, sharpeners, saws, gut hooks and knives) in their pack. The Evolve features just the tools a hunter needs in the woods; a knife (Havalon Piranta Quik-Change fitment), replaceable saw, fixed gut hook, pliers/wire cutters/strippers, and a universal bit driver. Ok, I like that. I won’t bring it to Africa but for other hunting purposes that has a lot of promise. My go to skinner is the Havalon Piranta in the States...interesting!

I have NEVER left home , with out a pocket knife ... Ever since I was 10 years old . I currently EDC ( Every Day Carry ) a vintage Buck Model 110 lock back folding knife , which utilizes a 440 C blade . Back when I was a child , it was even standard practice for boys to carry a pen knife or a pocket knife to school . Only those Italian style bayonet grind pick lock stiletto switchblades ... Were prohibited , because they were labelled as " Stabbing knives " .

Major, I have the same vintage knife it has served me well and I too never leave home without a knife always have at least one on me since I was like maybe 7 or 8 yrs old. In the day every boy in the "country" carried a knife even to school it wasnt a issue, knives were a essential tool of rural life. Played many a game of chicken and mumbly peg on the playground. You had to be careful who you played chicken with or you got stuck in the foot! lol
now the leftist world is crazy and if a kid even has a plastic picnic knife they will be expelled at the very least and the police called, such BS!!!!

It's lighter than my leatherman and my Army issued Gerber...

The only flaw is I would want the pliers to be needle nose

Great minds think alike , Buck Dog ! I absolutely ADORE my Buck Model 110 lock back folding knife . The 440 C stainless steel clip point blade is capable of processing 2 fully grown cheetal deer , consecutively ... Prior to needing a quick touch up , on a leather strop . I sharpen mine , with a diamond hone .

It is truly depressing , what this world has come to . A knife is the most basic of all tools , and ( In my humble opinion ) EVERY person should carry 1 on their person ... At all times . When @Kawshik Rahman ’s niece ( Fabliha ) went to study in Northumbria University in Great Britain ... 1 of her peers ( A boy , no less ) complained to the head master , that Fabliha was carrying a “ Lethal Weapon “ . The “ Lethal Weapon “ turned out to be a harmless Spyderco Bug folding knife ... Which the poor girl had attached to her key chain . The faculty gave the poor girl a very difficult time , for it . As it is ... They had singled her out before hand , because they found photographs on her smart phone ... Of her hunting kakar deer with Kawshik and I . Those British despise any thing , which makes them want to crawl in to their “ Safe Space “ .

I agree 100% with the good Major a pocket knife is an every day carry (EDC) item. My father gave me my first pocket knife in 1976 at the age of 12 and I have carried a knife every day since.
