Knife shape for hunting?

Can't go wrong with the basic Loveless drop point profile.

Scandi is easy to maintain the edge but will drive you nuts with any skinning job of substance.

I prefer a 3 to 4 inch drop point nice and thin behind the edge
I tend to agree if just for skinning and gutting! A mild hollow grind makes for a great skinner. Also makes for a lighter knife.

Many good points raised but a lot will come down to personal preference around the size, weight ,shape and general appeal and intended use.

One knife for EDC, Hunting, Stalking and Field Dressing. I have my preference others will have theirs

No further comment, I'm off to prepare the Popcorn,

I'm also a bushcrafter but I don't use my scandi's as hunting knifes, sure they will work but I find the more traditional flat or saber ground knife to be more effective for general tasks. I would recommend a French Trade Knife or a Kephart design. If the knife is going to be used for processing game I would look at a 4" butcher style blade.View attachment 465147

What’s the source on that bottom knife? It looks well thought out and practical.

It was made by Von Gruff, AH's Master Knife maker. Look up the thread "My African Knives" or http://www.vongruffknives.com. If you want a very high quality costom knife at a very fair price Von Gruff is the guy your looking for.

Canadian Belt Knife (stainless) for my wife that used to belong to me. And my newest infatuation Smith & Sons Brave made from D2 steel. Both have done very well in the field, but if I had to pick one...Canadian Belt Knife without question. The Brave is good, but the way the CBK keeps your knuckles away from the work makes a huge difference.

Each of these knifes are now riding in custom made leather sheaths from @CM McKenzie. He does incredible leatherwork.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
