Haha....certainly not a normal first safari. That's for sure.
Marius...I see lots of very happy hunters
Congrats to the hunters! Where was the hippo pic from (area)?
Can hippo be hunted down there?
Blue Duiker rivals that white Common Duiker from last season. Both amazing. Good stuff.
Water hole/blind or dogs?
Hey Dan!
First of all congratulations on your Elephant. Enjoyed your report thoroughly!
This male was hunted over a waterhole. We sat at the first spot for the morning, but I could feel the wind in my neck every no and so often. At mid day, we got some showers, so I called it, and we proceeded to go and have lunch with the idea to return a few days later. Just too many variables against us.
This was not our normal Blue Duiker spot, and required some travelling. The forecast showed hot conditions two days out.
Blue Duikers need to drink every day, even in some instances, twice a day, and with the showers that fell, I felt that there was enough moisture on the vegetation that would keep them under thick cover, without the need to expose themselves.
After lunch and some coffee, we were just about ready to pack up for the journey home, when something told me, "we are already here, might as well try." So, we chose another spot which had a natural blind, built from saplings etc. We had just sort of settled in, when the hunter got up and went outside of the blind, just to clear and cut some twigs and leaves that were in his way from his position. He proceeded to sit down, and was busy putting the batteries into his ear protection, when this ram came walking from under the canopy towards the water. As he stopped, the hunter made a great, 60 yard, almost facing straight on, shot with a 44 Mag Rifle.
The time from his being outside of the blind, cutting twigs to the shot might have been 30 seconds.
Need to plan my next trip, you in Toronto this year?
R U going to Dallas?
