I took my 1903A3 in .458 WM using Barnes 500 grain solids out plinking this morning and jumped some rabbits so switched from shooting stumps to rabbit hunting. Jumped approximately 8.

Killed the first rabbit while it was slowly repositioning inside think briars. A quartering towards me shot at approximately 5 yards. Got good penetration and the solid exited the rear leg. DRT

Second rabbit was sunning in short briars and grass. I leaned against a small tree and made the frontal brain shot at approximately 15 yds. DRT

Whoever built this rifle did a nice job. The irons are dead nuts.

Nice day for plinking hunting the American Tiny 11

I was questioning your choice of ammo, you know, because off it’s questionable penetration potential. Glad you were able to stop them in their tracks and avoid charges or long tracking jobs! :ROFLMAO:
Great eating, strong work using the big rifle

I am happy that you used enough gun. I am in favor of using my .375H&H on Chipmunks.

I left my knife in the snow where I cleaned the rabbits. I just walked back to get the knife. And two immature Bald Eagles were on them and the only thing remaining were some guts and one head. They must have been sparring because a 10’x10’ area was disturbed

I have an "enough gun" journal I have been updating for over 20 years. I thank you for your commitment to ballistics and will give you due credit within the entry confirming 458 WM is enough gun for rabbits. I will enter it directly under 338 LM on prairie dogs.

Thank you sir.

I was never mad enough to get out the big guns on them but I thank you for your valuable contribution to science!

Those are some expensive rabbits!!! Glad you didn't get charged!

That's a nice looking rifle and seems pretty accurate. Good thing you chose the solids for the quartering to shot. Do you think it'd be enough for a quartering away shot on the left side?

Hell with the hasenpfeffer. Where did you get that polecat hat?

Well done.

Never take chances on those bunnies.

Always safest to position for frontal brain shot, or pass on the shot. A bit risky being out with someone backing you up.

:ROFLMAO:

Your lucky you had enough fun- could have been all over had they charged you !

Isn’t it strange. People fly 20 hours. Pay tens of thousands of dollars to shoot small animals and rodents in Africa. But we don’t see it as good practice anywhere else.

I stump shoot with my traditional archery equipment also. Walking, stalking and shooting practice in the off season.

Getting used to a rifle. Off of the practice range.

I prefer my rabbit meat without shot pellets and usually use my bow.

People always want to talk about practice and how to prepare for safari. This is how you do it.

This is way more effective than measuring your groups from a bench or tripod.

I also enjoy stateside hunting with my African rifles. I was about to add a doe to the tally for my double earlier this year, but then I thought better given my location and the long drag out.

Be cautious remember the white rabbit from The Holy Grail!
