MINISTRY SETS UP A TASK FORCE ON WILDLIFE UTILIZATION

The Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife has set up a Task Force to look into the modalities of wildlife utilization as set out in Section 4(f), Section 72, and the Eighth Schedule of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013.

The Cabinet Secretary Hon. Najib Balala, EGH, on Friday 23rd March, 2018 established the Task Force, which will be headed by former KWS Director Dr. David Western. The other Task Force Members will be announced soon through a gazette notice.

The Task Force will evaluate options of consumptive utilization of wildlife (game farming and game ranching) in community and private lands, taking cognizance of the impacts, successes and failures of the previous wildlife cropping program.

The Task Force will also evaluate how consumptive utilization will contribute to the national GDP, food security, job creation and livelihood support, with a view of creating co-existence between communities and wildlife.

We are talking about consumptive wildlife ustilization and allowing land owners user rights. This is what was Gazetted in the relativley new wildlife policy.
But the wildlife policy explicitly states :No Safari Hunting will be permitted. The Policy is specific in regards to Safari Hunting. Sorry guys.

Is this not even a step in the right direction? Could land owners not at some point at least hunt themselves?

I prefer to be optimistic in this case. I look at this announcement as a step forward in right direction, to Namibian and South African model of farming and conservation. Lets see what the future will bring.

Does Kenya still have wildlife worth hunting?

Isn't Kenya the example always quoted as massive reduction in wildlife numbers due to no hunting, lots of grazing livestock, and population growth and spread of urbanization?

In my view, if Kenya opens hunting based on Namibian or South African model of game farming it could work.

But remember.............these are the same geniuses that burned up $200 million worth of ivory two years ago. Ivory already dead as canned lobster in a country who's GDP rivals chihuahua, Mexico. Two hundred million dollars! It would have gone a long way toward funding a strong anti poaching program. Damn...........what a loss. On the plus side, it did keep onlookers warm during the 3 days it took for the giant pile to burn up. The point? Don't expect any forward thinking from Kenya. Their main response to either threat or opportunity is to form a committee. ............occasionally hire a consultant........FW Bill

I do think Kenya would benefit from adopting the South Africa/Namibia model of game utilization, especially with the biodiversity they already have.

FWIW................Kenya banned elephant hunting in 1973, and all hunting in 1977, although it was effectively done by 1976. In the first 23 years of the ban, elephant numbers dropped by about 90%. Kenya's former first lady, Ngina Kenyatta sold 6 tons of ivory to China during this time. Personally. What brings this to mind is that Dame Daphne Sheldrick has died. She loved elephants. She and her late husband created Tsavo East, and founded a foster program for ill, injured and abandoned elephant. But during a 1996 interview she admitted that the hunting ban was a mistake. By that time, poachers had reduced their number to a fraction of the pre ban number. What was Kenya's response? To open the Sudanese border to bands of thugs armed with AK's to kill the remainder: siphoning off profit whenever ivory was confiscated. They were bribed by many international conservation organizations to burn $200 million worth of ivory a couple of years ago. This backfired in general, because the greenies did not provide payment as promised, but a few Kenyans became rich. IMO they are a hopelessly incompetent bunch of corrupt fools. Hidden in there are a few good people, but by and large, the Govt. is corrupt. Do not expect rational decisions from them regarding hunting........or anything else.........................FW Bill

Somebody has written on the forum before, that general public sentiment in Kenya is against hunting.

If that is correct, I wonder who does (and did) all the poaching?

There is number of tribes in Kenya, and I can not imagine that in their tradition are all against hunting. To hunt or not, is the decision of the goverment, I am speaking here only of this general public anti hunting sentiment.
