Hi, I am a keen hunter from NZ that's planning a trip to Africa next year. I have been gaining knowledge from the forum for the last month and am grateful for members knowledge and experiences. I have been hunting in NZ for 35 years, mainly red deer, fallow deer, tahr and wild pig in the mountains and forests of NZ. We are lucky to be able to hunt year round and I try to get out hunting most weeks. Our family loves venison and my wife and four boys consume a lot of it! I have recently purchased a CZ550 in 375 H&H which I am having customized. It will be getting an outing on deer shortly!

Good day! Welcome to AH!

G’day from Australia,

I’ve done Africa once and don’t use my CZ550 .375H&H enough.

I’m coming to see part of NZ late march.

Welcome to AH

Great rifle you got there in the CZ. Those 550 are indestructable. Thats why there are so many in South African hands. The 375H&H is a very good round for Africa as well.

All the best in the planning phase, and if there is anything i can be off assistance with please dont hesitate to contact me.

My personal best

Welcome aboard Tarata. We have a lot of Aussie and Kiwi members. CZ(s) are great working rifles. However, you need to make sure that they feed properly. Most need a little tweaking by a knowledgeable gunsmith. Use the AH search function to find out what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the welcome and the feedback. I have looked through the info ion the site with regard to the CZ550. As you note there is a wealth of info. I have worked on the rifle myself to smooth out the action and feeding mechanism. I appear to be lucky that it is feeding smoothly with 270 and 300gn ammo. I have changed the scope mounts to medium Warnes and tweaked the trigger to my liking.

My current project is getting my gunsmith to bed the action and lugs as well as float the front of the barrel. I am also altering the length of pull to suit my ideal dimensions. This will get me to the point where I will hunt deer with it.

My next project will be a new wooden stock with slimmer lines and trimming the barrel length to 23 inches to improve the balance, reduce the loaded weight to 10.5 lbs and ensure it points naturally.

I have managed to find some Norma brass, 300gn tsx to go with some H4350 and RWS magnum primers. Also have a range of loaded 270gn SP ammo, some 300gn SP ammo and quite a few Speer 235gn projectiles for local deer.

If you have any more suggestions let me know!

Regards Paul

Thanks for the welcome. I'm off to SA for my son's rugby trip 26th March. If you are around before then let me know. Wairarapa north of Wellington on the east coast.

In 13 African safari's and an equal number of North American hunts, BUZZ is the best guide I have ever hunted with.
