I didn’t know that one existed. I guess I just have to tell my wife that I have one more to get. I don’t have to be talked into buying another rifle very hard.
I am located just south west of Lexington. Right now for my light rifles I have a 308,7-08, 7mag, 300H&H, 300 Win, 300 WBY, 257 WBY, and a 280 REM. I have owned 5 338 Win Mags but they never seemed to stick with me. I will reach out when I get to Planning. ThanksHaving options is always a good thing. And being a Safari hunter from KY, we are almost neighbors, lol. What you tell your wife (or not) is totally your business. My practice is simple - I never hunt Africa with the same rifles twice. Why? Well, to me a rifle that went to Africa with me and served me well has now become a priceless heirloom and earned a right to be displayed on a wall. So, for each Safari, I work up and prep two new rifles. Or two nice used ones. One for PG and one for DG and larger PG.
With three nice DG rifles, all you will need is three more nice PG rifles to complete each battery. So far, I have used 308 and 7mm/08 for those roles. The 338 WM is a nice load. Kicks like a 375 lite. I just got a 338 RCM which is the compact version. It is light and handy and weighs only 6.5lb with scope attached. Recoil is not bad. I am still working on accurization of that one. If it shoots better after that, maybe. I have a 458WM that needs a little brother. In reality it is earmarked for a TX Nilgai hunt next year.
Either way, time to start planning your first Safari. Let me know if I can help? BTW - what part of KY is home for you?
I love mine. I think you will find that it is a Great rifle that will quickly become a favorite. I hope you get it sooner rather than later.Niiiice!
I put in a deposit/order on a Safari Express in .375 H&H for the next production run. Hoping to hear sooner rather than later.
nice. is the Leupold gold ring on you .375 h&h mag? very nice collection. hope to see and read more about performance on hunt or at rangeI just finished up completing my set of Winchester Safari Express rifles. It started a year ago with a 375 H&H. The416 REM was then added because if one is good then two must be better. I then found the 458 WM a couple of weeks ago at a gun shop brand new and just couldn’t walk away from it (you know just in case I have to fend off a herd of angry squirrels roaming the neighborhood). I guess now it’s time to decide what I am going to use all of these on. My wife has said no more Safari guns until I actually go on a Safari. So now the planning (and fun) starts View attachment 682140
excellent caliber choices. i had a .257 roberts 30+ years ago for black tail deer, and smaller varmints but never tried the .257 WBY...how accurate is your rifle at say + - 400 yards?I am located just south west of Lexington. can you share what caliber you use most in Africa? There seem to be quite a few of such rifle owners, but to each its own. I started hunting in Africa without owning a rifle for safaris because I did not know if I would enjoy this kind of hunting. I shot my first buffalo with a borrowed rifle caliber 375 H&H Magnum. Over the years and with increasing experience, I added gradually a few more rifles to my battery.
I have not shot it much but if it is anything like my other coopers it will be sub MOA. I will let you know later this summer when I get to testing it out.excellent caliber choices. i had a .257 roberts 30+ years ago for black tail deer, and smaller varmints but never tried the .257 WBY...how accurate is your rifle at say + - 400 yards?
Yes I have the VX5-HD in 2-10 on my 375 H&H and the VX6-HD 1-6 on my 416 REM. I just put a Delta Point Pro on the 458 WM. I am hoping that it will work for how I want to use it.nice. is the Leupold gold ring on you .375 h&h mag? very nice collection. hope to see and read more about performance on hunt or at range
