As you discovered Ridgewalker, the "smaller" or less commonly shot stuff are less commonly shot for a reason - they're a lot tougher to get than the "regular" plains game. Just ask @Royal27!
The only way to really have a realistic shot (pun intended) at the animals is to focus on them, often to the exclusion of other, more glamorous, game. You will be rewarded with a memorable hunt, I can assure you.
