I used Mason Leather (Lee) on YouTube to assist me in selecting the proper ammo for my African plains game hunt to feed my Benelli Lupo 300 Win Mag. I have come to trust his vids due to his consistency in testing and unbiased opinion. In the past I have used his testing to select ammo for certain weapons and situations and to eliminate certain rounds from my own testing. I experimented with about 4-5 different factory loads. My final selection was Federal Fusion Tip 180 gr. I was most impressed with the accuracy in my rifle and Lee’s comments on expansion. On my African safari I managed to take 14 trophies the 300 Win Mag , from 150-385 yards (2 other trophies were taken with my Ruger #1 375 H&H). With a well placed shot all but 3 dropped immediately. Those three were a warthog, zebra and a sable. The furthest distance travelled was 150 yards, by the sable. Most of the trophies did NOT have exit wounds. I only recall the above warthog did. One skinner went out of his way to recover 4 bullets for me. The four bullets came from the following trophies.
-Blesbok 375 yards
-Sable 200 yards
-Zebra 338 yards
-Red Hartebeest 320 yards
The four bullets weighted. I do not have the proper equipment to measure the expansion, but what was recovered was very deformed. I was not able to confirm or document which bullet was recovered from which of the four trophies.
