Well I gone and done it again bought another rifle I didn't t need but I wanted it. Problem is I need some help with it for information as I a m stumped even Dr Google can't tell me much

It is an 1892 Winchester lever action in 25/20 wcf. Nothing unusual in that you say well here is where it gets interesting.
It has an original Winchester marked STAINLESS STEEL OCTAGONAL BARREL finish partially in the original Japan black.
Can anyone provide me with any information on the stainless barrel.
Thanks in advance
Bob

No, but I can see why you bought it. It's a .25!
It's always .25 or .35 with Bob.

Two reasons I bought it one the price was right and it's a 25, you know that c a liberal that's 1 step above a 24 but 10x better.
Bob.

Bob, a very close friend of mine was in Australia a few years ago. He found a '92 with a stainless barrel, bought it and jumped through all the hoops to have it imported. IIRC, upon investigation he found that Winchester put stainless barrels on a lot of '92's for rabbit hunters after the original barrels were shot out. I'll talk with him later today and get the correct version.

Here is what Madis has to say about it in “The Winchester Book”:

Bob, I just talked with my friend Larry and he removed some of the cobwebs in my memory. The rifle he bought from Dan belonged to Dan's deceased brother. Dan had borrowed it and, not being able to get primers, (sound familiar) made his own which were corrosive and ruined the barrel. The brother was angry upon finding his ruined barrel and told Dan he was owed a new barrel. Dan contacted Winchester who sent the stainless barrel and he put it on the rifle.
Larry said that George Midas' book on Winchester had a lot of information on the stainless barrels and would be interested to know when your rifle was produced.

25-20 was and probably still is one of the best small game cartridges around. Hopefully it shoots accurately enough for small game out of the 92.
A friend of mine killed his first whitetail in Oregon using the 25-20. A bit under powered for that IMO.
Hope you enjoy your new toy! I’ll be waiting in anticipation to read more about it.

I don't know the year but the serial number is 385,466 if that helps.

@Ridgewalker
The person that had it before me used my handloads with the 75 grain Speer hotcore to take a couple of big billys. The biggest was shot at around 75 yards with the bullet passing thru the animal with massive damage. When him and his mate butchered it for dog meat his mate asked what he shot it with. Clay pulled a round out of his pocket and said this. His mate replied your joking my 357 doesn't do that much damage. He could also shoot tennis balls at 100 yards with it so I assume it's accurate enough.

Although they’d make a nice set if you wanted to export yours....
@Skinnersblade
No I will just keep mine. At least i can get ammo for it in OZ. We are smart enough to know it is a rifle cartridge and was never chambered in a revolver, unlike the law in Nova Scotia.

I have gone through so many handguns my NYS pistol permit Amendment folder is over an inch thick. I only have 4 now. I have had so many rifles I have lost track but I had the tacticool bug as a 20 year old kid. I only have sporting rifles now. And one tacticool airgun... because the FX Impact is just too good to not have one.

Total of maybe 12 firearms. I will never need more and could probably do with less. My 12 gauge rifle is probably going to be put up for sale soon so there will one less. I am with you @rookhawk My priorities don't revolve around shooting anymore. Time with my kids and wife is way more important than turning ammunition into noise at some range somewhere with strangers.

Bob, from the serial number it appears your 1892 was made in 1907 as the numbers started with 376,497 and 1908 started with 437,920. Larry said he was going to research this a bit more and asked if your barrel had 1892 stamped on it?

I will have to have a look when I pick it up. Thank you for the manufacturer date. If it is a 1907 model the barrel must be a refit as they only did the stainless from 1927 until 1932. Gets more interesting.

Tell me more about the 25-20 Bob?
The price was right and I just got a bolt action Savage Sporter in this caliber.
Will it do for Impala?
