Hello everyone
I am just about to purchase a Howa 1500 Barreled Action to put into a chassis (MDT XRS). I have found out online that there are a few different versions of the Howa 1500 Barreled Action available. Some come with an integrated Magazine (Metal Bottom/internal Magazine) and some come ready for a Detachable Magazine.
There is a chance that the one ready for a Detachable Magazine will not be available here, so I searched and have found the Howa 1500 Ammoboost conversion kit online, but not found any info on whether one needs it for a chassis, or just the factory Howa 1500 rifles.
Is there a way to tell which version it will be, without seeing it? (Like the Model Number for instance) If I get one with the Integrated Magazine, would I have to buy the conversion kit, or could I run Detachable Magazines without the conversion kit?

For hunting rifle, you do not need detachable magazine.

Detachable magazine is hype coming from assault rifles culture, and IPSC sports.
Detachable magazine means fire power. Hunting is not about that.

If you need additional equipment that most certainly at one point you will loose in the field, then that is detachable magazine. (I did loose that, certainly)

You will go in the field, stalk that oryx, and fire one accurate shot.
Then you will drag that oryx home and skin it.

Per manufacturer website chassi accept only their magazines.

The MDT LSS chassis for a Howa Mini action will use the factory Howa mini action mags. I put one together in 6.5 Grendel because I can use an AR adjustable butt stock for the smaller grandkids on deer and antelope. So depending on your cartridge needs, that could be an option. MDT does a good job listing the magazine requirements on their web site…

I like detachable magazines but it's not a necessity.

Hold onto your money till you try the rifle. They are still making them.

Howa, Tikka and Remington have so may modifications and accessories available it's easy to get caught up in what's is the latest and greatest. I am guilty of always looking at something new but sometimes defer and get on with what I have.

Your Howa will be great, the next important step is ammo.

I'm not a fan of detachable magazines for hunting rifles. They cause more problems than they solve. I much prefer an internal magazine and floor plate. I even prefer a blind magazine over a detachable magazine on hunting rifles.
@Bonk
I agree a blind mag or floor plate is best for hunting. To me detachable mass belong on 22s nt centrefire rifles . Just call me old fashioned.

If you were doing goat control or similar with a bolt-action, a couple of detachable magazines with up to 10 round capacity could be useful but otherwise … the above mentioned comments about hunting versus tactical/competition rifles apply.

In Australia you are lucky if you can hunt goats in a lot of places as now they muster them and export them overseas for good money.

I have read of that happening in Oz. Some farmers in NZ do a muster when their goat numbers climb to a certain level, so that they can send them to an abattoir.
Local knowledge and connections can still get you into timber plantations and possibly some general farming operations. There is public access goat hunting in DoC controlled parks and reserves. My NZDA branch is managing to keep cullers out of a local area via regular club hunts to control the goat population.
You can reportedly subsidise your hunting if you have a good contact in the local Indian community but that would only be for nannies and kids.

We to have plenty of public land to access them but with the current Covid-19 restrictions it is impossible to go anywhere.

I have rifles with detachable magazines, including a Howa .223, I have seen a magazine fall out as above but I saw it happen .

The lever is long and the spring is weak. If you want one consider that. I think you could remedy it easily. Add that to my list of Covid projects after I walk the dog, ooh Friday night, I'll have a beer and think about it, after the dog is walked.
