Is the 465 H&H as dead as your dinner?

Just mostly dead. I don't have the rifle. A friend gave them to me from a closed custom ammo company. I have them as a conversation starter on my deskView attachment 295946View attachment 295947
WOW! I’ve been pleading here on AH for months for someone to produce a photo of an actual .465 h an h cartridge to prove it still exists. Congrats! You did it! Pheroze started this thread, so when he sees this he’ll lose his mind! Ha! Ha!

Those look really cool. I wonder what bullet is sitting on top of that piece of brass? Unfortunately, I think that is actually the 500/465 H&H cartridge for double rifles, not the 465H&H for bolt action rifles. That bad boy is the rimmed version not the belted magnum.:) Alas, the quest continues.....:P Elmer Fudd:

Say it ain’t so! I won’t sleep tonight! Thanks a lot Pheroze! Ha! Ha! Maybe better luck tomorrow?

Oldish thread but:

.375, .400 and .465 H&H.

The 400 is a bolt action .450/400 and the 465 is a bolt .500/465. The .500/465 was H&H’s answer to the .450 ban back in the day so it’s sort of their unique bore diameter. Hence why they went .465 for their new big bolt gun cartridge. Neat idea IMO. Bullets aren’t hard to find and any .378 based case can be used to make cases so there’ll always be a way to get them.

Another 2 aspects to their designs was smooth feeding like the .375 (hence the long necks and shoulders) and to actually make the belt have a use like the .375 does. They also went for a classic H&H look. I reckon they pulled it off. If I had the money I’d get a .375 and a .465 H&H.

IMO the 400 H&H is brilliant well balanced cartridge that is a day late in coming onto the scene. There are other cartridges that fill pretty much the same niche? The 465 I cannot comment on, but the 500/465 was one of THE lowest pressure cartridges of all the heavies, an excellent choice for tropical heat.

It must be, I have a half dozen boxes of bullets Ive been trying to sell for a year now!!

Nice photo, but have you actually seen/held a real .465 H and H cartridge? Apparently, nobody here on AH has? Until someone can produce an actual cartridge for “proof of life”, it’s existence is just a fairy tale to me. Kinda like looking for a Bigfoot, Loch Ness monster or a Unicorn. If not, keep looking! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Well, if it’s a fairy tale you better tell H&H the thing they made and are selling doesn’t exist :P

Very convincing proof this cartridge exists, but who owns or knows anyone who owns a rifle chambered for it? I’ve seen the .577 Tyranosaurus, .550 Triceratops, .600 Overkill, etc., here on AH, but NO .465 H and H? Should be more common than the above wildcats?

What’s the 550 Trike?

Here’s a counter question to you: have you seen anyone here purchase a new H&H (not secondhand) in any caliber?

Now think of how small those numbers are. Now add to that it’s a big specialist cartridge. Most people would be going for 375 I’d say.

Or if they’re spending those big amounts on a large caliber gun most people go the extra mile and get a double.

Act quickly! I see it's marked down to a more reasonable price.....
With the money saved, you might be able to buy
ONE cartridge for it? If you could find ONE.

the 465 and 400 H&H were both cartridges invented just for the sake of H&H collectors. they use rare bullet diameters and match the ballistics of cartridges already in existence.

why buy a 465 H&H when you can buy a 460 WBY? (same parent case but .468" bullet vs .458" bullet)

why buy the 400 H&H when you can buy the 416 RM? (similar parent case but .411" bullet vs a .416" bullet)

I like something different Just think when you tell somebody you have a 400 Holland in Holland.
