I just watched the video posted by @crs very interesting. That krieghoff is amazing!

I like the idea of a speed test for the purpose of evaluating fundamentals. Form falls apart under stress. I’m curious to video the difference between my bolt rifles and the R8 that is shortly to arrive.

Oh, and Shots 5 and 6 are about when you forget to load your gun!

My local club has a 'charging lion' simulation. The target 'charges ' at less than 1/2 the speed of a real lion/elephant/buffalo. Over a distance of 30 m, with rifle unmounted, very few people can put more than 1 round on target. I have down it with a double 500 NE. With a 458, it is possible but most of us cannot manage. I didn't see it done but apparently a Blaser rifle can do it regularly.So what am i saying- in reality charge from 30 m, you will only get 1 shot, whatever rifle is in your hands.

Sako has some detachable magazine models in .375. The 85 Kodiak is the first one that comes to my mind.

Practice under pressure is likely to improve performance under pressure.

Are those magazines able to be changed rapidly? If so cool, but I think they are made more for carriage of spare ammo and convenient loading and unloading.

It is pretty easy and quick. Push on a lever in front of the magazine AND push up on the magazine bottom, and the magazine comes out. Push in a fresh magazine. Not as fast as a reload on an AR or 1911 but not too bad.

Well then if you have one, shoot it for speed. It would be interesting to see how fast that magazine change is. Sounds complex and counterintuitive to change the magazine.

The Browning X bolt and older A bolt have detachable magazines in .375. I have an A bolt in .338. Not the best magazine system for quick magazine exchange. The polycarbonate rotary style magazine of the X bolt is much faster. But I guess, it’s a moot point anyway after firing four .375s from either, as you’ve at least stopped what animal was charging at you or not? Reload while running!

At some point the push feeds are probably faster to load over the top from a belt or pouch singly. The exactitude of aligning the magazine and ensuring it latches when it wasn't designed to be quick change combat reloaded would be tough to surmount on then run.

Partly true, but think of it this way: Would you rather drop your empty Glock magazine while running and load a freshly charged magazine into it while running, or try and load fresh rounds singly into the top of the now empty magazine while running or STANDING? Yes I know the Glock example isn’t the same as a rifle magazine exchange is/would be, but it still would be fast? I’m not a proponent of push feed rifles for DG, but there are a lot of them used in the field for DG? So why not detachable magazine fed?

It's an example that doesn't parallel the rifle reload for several reasons. Its magazine is engineered to be rapidly changed, fall away freely and its ejection port is not designed to loaded through. I would likely stand or move steadily and affect the rifle magazine reload because I reckon it closer to changing the battery in a Motorola radio with all the sliding levers and buttons and a lack of beveled magazine well. Not especially a difficult task, but yet not intuitive either. The port is designed to load into as well so that's an advantage. With a push feed gun, you don't even have to get the round into the magazine lips which can be a huge chore with a scope mounted. It may well be faster to drop rounds in singly. If you can make decisive hits and load smoothly in this manner, you may well have something.
I think it's coming down to reloading or running. Trying to do both you will affect neither sufficiently to aid in the course of events.

If you’re going to more than one in the magazine of any rifle and the first one you load doesn’t go in right. There’s a high probability of jamming.

Also the only bolt action I can think of that is designed for quick change magazine are the scout rifles like the Ruger. A 308 isn’t much of a Dg round though.

Well I am back at this again testing things at speed. I have switched to a 12" gong at 50 yards. I am not very fast, but I'm building skills with the rifles. The Lott No.1 becomes oppressively hot at 8 or 9 rounds. The M70 I have not really worked on the reload as much, but the four shots are rapid and on track no problem.

@CoElkHunter the M70 is a .375 H&H. I am only invested in .375 H&H and .458 Lott. I have three .375's, but the M70 is the only repeater. The others are single shots an Encore and a No. 1. I like single shots. I really like #1's. I'm not looking to win anything, I'm looking to skill build. Especially since I have dropped off of the traditional loads in both calibers. The 285 in .375 and the 400 in .458 is what I am shooting right now.

I may not win anything with my Lott, but I will make thunder and drive off the evil spirits and any liberals within earshot. My neighbor thought it was cute to shoot his 9mm the other day. The Lott running eleven rounds on the gong brought new meaning to shooting. Unfortunately the wife was home and she doesn't like the Lott so much. She believes it is a cannon and should be played with elsewhere. Probably wasn't a good idea to play with it on a headache day.

Your a good man shooting your rifles as often as you do. I’m envious. I haven’t shot mine in three weeks. Life and work have gotten in the way. Keep shooting!
