Only used one once...one shot...but I liked the rifle....in Tanzania was in back of cruiser and a wounded buff charged out of a gulley at my friends brand new vehicle....i grabbed his rifle and managed to put one in it....rifle felt nice and handled well in a bit of a confused situation...my friend said he had visions of the front end of his brand spanking new cruiser getting remodelled..luckily it didn't even get a scratch..:E Big Grin:

Excellent early Interarms Whitworth, finished in Manchester UK in the 1970s.

The "rook" stamping mark on the barrel, and the front sight base is indicative of the early Whitworths that were hand finished with skilled hands.

My .458 Win Mag is 1980s vintage and very nice, accurate, and handles like my first love in my arms.

These early Whitworths are just a bit better made and finished.

Have owned 4 Whitworths and still have 2 that I won't sell.

It's not a Dakota 76, but for one that want a good basic big bore, you can't go wrong with a Whitworth .458.

GLWS.

Are these True 98 mauser actions or a copy of some sort?
I guess that depends on how you define "True 98 Mauser" actions. They're definitely M98-based actions with the primary defining characteristics; but also with commercial differences such as the hinged floorplate, adjustable trigger, sliding safety, and the absence of the thumb groove and loading clip slot. There are probably more differences, but these are just the ones that come to mind.

I have two of these rifles (albeit in 375H&H), and they are great rifles; with a ton of features and craftsmanship for the money. One of the best values on the market.

GLWS!

I have one of these. In my opinion, you will not be able to find one at this price for much longer. They are too good, and there really is not a competitive rifle being made today. I guess Winchester 70 would qualify, but good luck finding one.

I've taken two cape buffalo with mine, and I wouldn't sell it for twice the price being asked here.

I believe the spelling of “calibre” is an indicator of an earl rifle too. Congratulations to buyer and seller

Sights are soldered on, address and castle on barrel are dead giveaways of the first generation Whitworth Rifles.

Very good buy!
Thanks for removing the temptation!!

Another sign this is an earlier rifles is the checkering on the fore end, the later rifles have a line dividing the wraparound checkering on each side, this one doesn't, the wraparound checkering is continuous. Nice rifle indeed !!

'Sold the exact same gun 5-10 yrs ago for $1,150 including ammo/brass/bullets dies and shipping. It shot EXCEPTIONALLY well using Fed Fusion 500 gr (clocked at 2090 fps). bbl was actually 25.5 in or roughly 65 cm and I suspect the wood is a bit darker than it appears in the pic (as the Whitworth wood is a lot nicer than the std. VA Interarms.) 'Son collected a nice buffalo at 20 yds with it, after wading through a muddy swamp. WE were the daggaboys upon return.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]

Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
