Input on quick detach rings...

I have Leupold QD rings on most of my big bore rifles, 2 x 375H&H's & a 458 Lott, all Kimber's & have had no problems after numerous trips to Zimbabwe & Alaska.

I have a 416 Ruger & a CZ 550 in 505 Gibbs on the way & am trying to decide on QD rings for them as well. Unfortunately Leupold doesn't offer QD's for either as far as I know.

Revising this old thread, good comments in here but some follow up questions now that it’s 5+ years later.

I went QD in prep for my upcoming first Africa trip because a friend recommended it and it made sense to me. Primarily for keeping the optics with you rather than being thrown around by luggage handlers who (some) seem to enjoy seeing how harshly they can throw luggage around. The optics are the most expensive part (in my case) so knowing how they’re handled in my backpack at all times seems wise to me.

For me DG follow up wasn’t as important because this first trip is PG but also makes sense for future trips if they happen and I want to go for some DG. A Buffalo at a minimum is likely in my future.

My initial question, based on the experiences of the many here, was how accurate they’ve been upon reconnect and so far all comments have been that appears to be no issue. Which is great to hear. My next question after reading this thread is there was a comment about concerns carrying your scopes on through security in other countries, anyone here have that issue or how many have had zero issues with this? I know my recommending friend didn’t have any issues this far.

I Like the Leupold QDs,. I have QDs on most of my hunting that have open sights. I like the simple lever to lock and unlock as opposed to the others that require several turns to disengage plus the lug that may fall. The Leupolds are fast and have always locked up tight, I just put some 30mm on my 404Jeff

@Katy Darren - I had Warne QD rings on my CZ550 375H&H holding a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20 and they returned to zero EVERY SINGLE TIME. Scope was removed after each range session while I cleaned the rifle and I never gave it a second thought. I'd buy Warne rings with confidence.

Other excellent options are Alaska Arms and Talley. Take a look at each manufacturer because there are minor differences between them.

My current scope mounts are QD's made by Contessa and for the Blaser R8 rifles. A little different setup from a traditional rifle, but still accomplish the same thing.

As for taking a scope through security, I've never done it. My y Leica Geovid binos through security several times with no problems, but not a scope. I leave the scope in the case with the rifle. Never had an issue with the binos.

Thanks. I have Talley on my 7 mag and Warne on my 375 H&H.

Honestly can’t imagine why bringing a scope through security would be an issue so was a bit surprised to see that.

I tried leupolds QD rings twice and had problems trying to get them off quickly. I didn’t like how small their lever design is and they didn’t have the same levels on tension. Seemed to me the tolerances on bases and rings are fairly wide.

Since then, Im running 3 sets of Alaskan Arms and 2 sets of Talleys with no issues quickly getting them on and off. All with repeatable zeros from 375, 416 and 458.

I do not own a rifle (nor will I ever) that doesn't have QD rings. I NEVER fly with guns with their optics attached. The horrific things baggage handlers can do are far more likely to break an optic than a gun. I carry-on all my optics and I never leave them out of my sight. No issues doing this over dozens of international flights over the past decade.
