I am looking for a used double in a caliber suitable for elephant. 450/00 - 470 Nitro express or 500 Nitro. Please PM me if you are interested in selling.
Best
Aaron

Lets just say that i have a budget for I am a high school history teacher but i am very interested in buying a double. Please PM me and we can discuss some exact numbers and figures

What would you be looking for in terms of like length of pull?

I think used Krieghoff are a good value.

The absolute best way to get into a quality double at the lowest price is going to be a used o/u. I have a V/C o/u in .450/.400 I’d be willing to part with. Shoot me a pm if you are interested.

The new Chapuis seem pretty solid for the money.

I have no dog in this hunt, but I would tell you that the best two choices in my opinion are vintage English guns and modern Heym rifles. You're going to pay $20k-$infinity for English, you're going to pay $20k-$75k for the latter.

If you don't have that kind of budget, I implore you to buy a really nice $10k or less for an outstanding magazine rifle in a dangerous game caliber.

There are no cheap double rifles, only horrific, disappointing, you'll regret it double rifles at low prices.

I completely agree with the staying away from a " bargain " double but i have a 404 Jeffery that i plan on bringing as well but the idea of hunting a Bull Ele with a double is just something i cant seem to shake

Chapuis doubles are 10-15k depending on the model. They're solid rifles and are owned by Beretta. That said, there are many other dangerous caliber rifles a lot cheaper. Since the 375 H&H is the minimum caliber to hunt all dangerous game, any .40 cal. family of rifles will do the job effectively, and can be used to hunt other game. The rifle caliber you want is specific to the largest dangerous game. What will you do with the rifle after you get your trophy? Will it be a "one and done" that will sit in a gun safe?

I would add you can get a new Chapuis 450-500 that can be cut to your LOP for $13 from Champlain. You have a long LOP. You will struggle finding that unless you buy new like this. The 470 is $15. You get a lifetime guarantee. Best DR for the money. A Heym is awesome but you will pay through the nose if you can even find one and it will not be your LOP which on a big bite DR is a real problem unlike a bolt action

If you read enough posts on here, you’ll learn my biases. I personally would not own a double rifle other than Vintage British or modern Heym. Others will respectfully disagree.

Both have their merits and I can explain the pros and cons. Both have the pro that if you decide to cancel hunting Africa for ten years and decide to sell, you will not take a bloodbath. You buy a lesser gun and it’s like buying a boat, you will never get your money back and the gun may not be functionally correct.

If you were my son I’d say your 404J is perfect. If you insisted on a double and you were my son, I’d disown you for throwing $15k away you'll never get back on a lesser double of disappointing quality.

As my friend @rookhawk said we agree to disagree. I guess I have been lucky, I have owned 8 and sold 7, I always pretty much got my money back. I bought a new Chapuis 450-400 for my first buffalo hunt…sold it for what I paid for it. In my opinion, there just are not a lot of DRs on the market at this time

There is a .470 and a .450/.400 krieghoff in the upcoming rock island auction.

Just remember to factor in the buyers premium.

And to remember the forces required to push the top safety on A krieghoff. It isn’t a safety, it actually cocks the mainsprings. Pros: super safe. Cons: hard to operate. Net result: diminished value which means a bargain used if you like it, but disappointing to some that purchase and find out they later hate the feature.

i recently went to the berretta gallery in NYC and was very impressed with the chapuis and they are for sure a real possibility

IDK anything about doubles - Gordy and Sons in Houston has a used Bernardelli in 475 No 2 for 12K

Seems like that'd be a bit of a challenge on projectiles anyway...caliber .483?
