Importance of taking popular chamberings

If you're traveling with another hunter put half of your ammo in their bag and half of theirs in your bag. If one persons bags get lost you'll still have ammo. Another trick I use is to wear my hunting boots on the plane but pack a pair of slippers in your carry on bag. As soon as I board I change footwear. I also wear clothes that I could hunt in and pack another complete change of clothes in my carry on bag.

What I do, is if I am happy with the way my hunt went I leave some or all my ammo with either outfitters or ph. If a client needs it he will have it on hand. If they are reloads that I wouldn’t want someone else to shoot then I take those home.

I think if a few people would do this they would get a good variety of ammo around. Also makes packing for return trip easier.

These days any ph/outfitter should have a rental in camp and appropriate ammo to go with it. If your gun and ammo get lost, your ph MOST LIKELY has you covered. Now if you lose your undies. . .

I can recall 30 years ago when the gunsmith and I were obsessing over the details of two cartridges for the rifle to be built - either a .338-06 or .30-06. The rifle was to be hauled around the world after game.

In the end we agreed it should be .30-06 because if the ammo never arrived wherever I was, more likely than not .30-06 ammo could be scrounged.

Know what? Not once (knock on wood) has my ammo failed to arrive wherever I've been. Jeesh.

Sure woulda liked shooting that .338-06...

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
